mikesy Posted November 25, 2013 Report Share Posted November 25, 2013 On my perm the rabbits spook the second you shine a beam on them and there's not enough time to get them in your sights so I am considering NV I'm thinking of putting in an order for one of the Yukon Proton's, was hoping to find out if any of you guys have one and how you rate it. Sole use at present would be for rabbits up to 100m with a .22 LR. I've never owned or used NV gear , so I'm a total novice and I am trying to avoid buying a white elephant. V8 90 Posted November 25, 2013 Report Share Posted November 25, 2013 There are mixed reviews for the Photon - I have 1 on my Hmr & for £400 I think it's good - it benefits from LED IR (T20) rather than the onboard Laser IR. Dave-G Posted November 26, 2013 Report Share Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) It's got some gripes that much more expensive ones don't have but for £400 its a marmite scope you might get on with or not. It's looking like some are better than others but the importer is aware of some of the focal issues and seems willing to address them. The photon is different to a lot of NVD's in that the low light camera is allowed to work as it was designed to rather than than struggle to draw the images through the several lenses of a dayscope then squeeze it through a 6mm ish diameter exit pupil. As a result it can be used much more covertly with much less Ir illumination that gives away your position to bunnies that are often close enough to hear or smell you, particularly once a powerful light is shone in their direction. Given you are shooting sub 100 yards at red light shy bunnies they will soon be dull red light shy bunnies too unless you keep the Ir to a bare minimum. Lowish Ir lets you get closer - look at these where I drive my 4WD to within 60 ish yards and still don't bother them but a more powerful Ir might have scattered them. I use a compact 501b IR conversion - and yes I'm floating my own boat here because I convert some for people can't follow my thread telling them how to do it. These shots were at air ranges bit you can see well past the quarry. Despite the slightly blurred image and eyebloom which can be cheaply improved you can see the exiting pellet and blood splash on the ground behind them. I'm not saying that out goriness, just pointing out the detail that can be seen with minimal IR signature when using the Photon. My 'modified LED lamping torch' thread on here shows you how to convert budget priced 501b red LED lamping torches to an Ir illuminator using a 1 watt Ir module from ebay and an aspheric lens. Funny that I went out with mine last night it was near freezing and it didn't work nearly as good as it had when warmer. Seemed short of light to me. It could be quite possible that because there is a mini TV display inside which heats up during use that it is creating condensation against the cold lens glass. I have had this problem with my T20 LED torches, it looked like the battery was going flat when in fact the condensation on the lens was acting like a diffuser. Ive given the lenses in my T20's a wipe over with RainX and they have worked perfectly since.
