pin
This is called a dictionary attack, get a better ISP, install some spam scanning software (will depend on how you collect your mail and with what software).

Hairy Pat
If they are from one source the use the Block Sender function in Message. Pat

Cranfield
Mailwasher Pro is probably the best Spam sorter there is. There is a free Mailwasher about, but its not very good and its produced by a different Company. http://www.firetrust.com/
naddan28
another really simple technique is if they are always using the same sort of subject just set up a filter on the mail account that automatically deletes them, i used to get loads of dodgy porn spam with farm girls... in the subject title. Now 3yrs l8tr after a simple filter nothing of a similar vein ever again and its not as if any proper contacts of mine are going to send that in a subject title! I know its not very high tech but sometimes the simple things work best:D

pin
Dictionary attacks literally try all addresses within a range set by the spammer. So from a@wanadoo.co.uk to zzzzzzz@wanadoo.co.uk will be spammed. Many millions of addresses. Its a very crude technique but it does work. The problem with filtering these things at your computer is you have to download the mail first, ideally you want an ISP who has a spam filtering service to chop them out at source as much as possible (as they come into your provider, you never see the mails). There are various newer technologies being trialled at the moment, like SPF (sender policy framework) etc which will try and patch inadequacies in the mail protocols in use on the internet - none of these are actually very useful at the moment. It is very reactive, for the most part the companies trying to block spam are a few steps behind the spammers, so every so often you will get "hit" with a load of spam, then that new technique will be known and blocked. Until the next new thing they come up with. The main problem is spam is big business - a competent and skilled spammer can make thousands and thousands of dollars a month, simple supply and demand. Until the capability to make money from stupid people disappears they will keep doing it.
louilester
Mailwasher Pro is probably the best Spam sorter there is.There is a free Mailwasher about, but its not very good and its produced by a different Company. http://www.firetrust.com/ I've used Mailwasher myself and also installed it for some of my clients. I find it a great program. It's takes a litle getting used to as you fire it up before startig your email, but it is effective and 'learns' along the way too. As for ISP's I use an ISP that I have a distributorship for. If anyone wants a price comparison or information then send me a PM. regards, Loui. Gully
I use the outlook express filter to put in the trash and mark as read any email that doesn't have my name in the message. Everyone I know writes "Dear Nick...". Occasionally I flick through the trash but very few get sent there in error.
