Ear defenses?

A thread under the wildfowling section reminded me to post on here. What electronic ear defenders would you recommend? I'm not to fussed for the small 'hearing aid'/expensive ones. Just something that does the job but allows you to hear well at the same time.

Would be interested to hear your views :good:

*ps spell check changed the title..should really say defenders

I use Deben Electronic Protection, very slim, individual volume control for each ear, wind muffle on the microphones. Very easy to hear what's going on around you but nice and quiet when you pull the trigger. They also have a switch on each ear piece that can't be turned on accidentally. Light weight and they keep your ears warm. My son uses Bilsom electronic ones, also very good but only one volume control which controls both ears. Both are great. ATB.

Which ones do you prefer? I normally just wear the standard, 'ear muffs' type ones when I'm out. Keeps the ears warms as well. But could do with something so that I can hear what's happening

TBH I tend to wear ear plugs with my shotgun (unless it's really cold) and the peltors when shooting unmoderated rifles

the sonic 2's at £10ish are good value even if you don't get on with them it's not the end of the world.

The peltors are about 15 years old and are in need of new volume/switches as they crackle as you turn them on but they still do the job.

I don't feel they are robust enough for the foreshore and what if you drop them in the mud or loose them in the dark? stick to cheap disposable foam plugs I say

Cheers for all the feedback; given me plenty to look into!

Cheers kent. Can't make my mind up. Being able to hear on a flight is pretty essential,(especially if the cloud cover is poor). On the other hand, I don't want to fork out money for something that's just going to get wrecked..

Well you will not hear it later on anyhow if you don't protect what you have today. Watch the dog, they soon learn! Try a few flights with foam plugs (roll the ends so they go all the way in the ear canal then wait with your finger touching the end while they re-expand to fit).

If the dog is constantly looking to the left or trying to pivot around to the rear let him and do the same. if he knows what its all about just trust him

I know you said no hearing aid-esque ones but...

I have a set of ACS sonic valves and they are the comfiest ear defenders you could ask for, and the valves are super sensitive, i can easily hear wingbeats and calls with them on, sound is hardly dampened until you fire the shot! Besides they only set me back 100 sheets and that was with the fitting making them super good value!
