Dazza9t9
Hey all I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I am after some advice, as the title suggests I am after some budget binos . The only problem is I know nothing about them. I have been doing some reading on the subject etc I'm new to the sport so not owned any before I want a pair for general field use, quarry spotting / observation etc. I was hoping to pick up a second hand pair however they hardly come up. At the moment I'm looking at spending £50 unless I'm told its a total waste of time. I have found the following on the sportsman gun centre web site and was wondering if any had any knowledge Bushnell 20 x 50mm Powerview Rubber Armoured Binocular - £49.99 http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/19521774f9e7009622586143/Bushnell+20+x+50mm+Powerview+Rubber+Armoured+Binocular/ Bushnell10 x 42mm Nature View Plus Rubber Armoured Binocular - £53.99 http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/0521327ab84e07762485470/Bushnell10+x+42mm+Nature+View+Plus+Rubber+Armoured+Binocular/ Tasco Sierra 10 x 42mm Rubber Armoured Binocular - £29.99 http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/24521f7129adb94391674923/Tasco+Sierra+10+x+42mm+Rubber+Armoured+Binocular/ Tasco Sierra 10 x 42mm Rubber Armoured Binocular - £29.99 http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/24521f7129adb94391674923/Tasco+Sierra+10+x+42mm+Rubber+Armoured+Binocular/ Bushnell Spectator 10x 50mm Rubber Armoured Binocular - £29.99 http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/1521777e395df2332536139/Bushnell+Spectator+10x+50mm+Rubber+Armoured+Binocular++ Now there is a lot in this price range but these seemed heavily discounted. Thanks in advance

team tractor
I spent £15 over 12 years ago in dixons as was then. I leave them in my van permanently and their great . I was looking at a hill around 600 yards away and can easily pick out grass, fences, sheep, rabbits etc
Dazza9t9
Team tractor what was the make and magnification of those? One area I struggle with is knowing how much magnification I need and how big other lens (sorry I cannot remember what it's called, the second number)
bakerboy
You have just missed out on a great deal from Lidl's £17.99 for a cracking pair of Bins. You never know they may have some let on the shelf.

Westley
If it helps, the figures mean as follows :- 10 x 25 equals 10 times magnification with a 25mm front (object) lens diameter. The other figures relate to the field of view at the stated distance. I have just bought a used pair of Bushnell 8 X 56 which although a bit heavy, are great for the £20 I paid. I do not use more than 10 times magnification, I am unable to hold them still enough, it is an age thing !!
rtaylor
I bought a pair of Zeiss jenoptem 10x50 for about £40 of ebay a few years ago. I use them for all my stalking. Downside is they are a bit heavy and old fashioned but they are amazingly clear optics and very good at dusk, I've used them in the lamp for spotting foxes, much better than my mates Hawke ones which were over £100. GOLDCREST
The maximum magnification I would recommend would be ten power...say 10x40 or 10x50 for example. The reason being, though its tempting to go for a high magnification, you'd never hold the things steady enough and the image would be dancing about all over the place..If you think you need higher power go for a spotting scope and a tripod. Rather than buying cheapo new bins, have you thought about a better quality pair of second hand ones...But make sure they don't strain your eyes as this can mean the prisms inside are out of alignment..I've seen new ones with this problem as well as S/H....spend some time looking through them, and don't be rushed. In Focus across in Denby Dale have a great selection usually, both new and used..the staff are very helpful as well ,great advice and you can try as many pairs out as you like with no pressure to buy...Great test view across the valley as well......They do spotting scopes too.. I've bought second hand stuff from In Focus several times in the past and never had any problems...The last ones I bought a couple of years ago were a pair of German made Optolyth 10x40...they're old and S/H but lightweight and the image brightness is absolutely superb...About £40 I paid for them if I remember correctly..... I have no connection with In Focus by the way ,other than being a satisfied customer.
