Ferret Master
Hi, I went ferreting again today at the rugby club. My friend Josh was also coming along and he had never ferreted before but he got stuck in straight away in the thick of the brambles. The first bury was along a hedge which was about 30m long. We netted up all the holes we could see and entered Nippy my Sandy jill. Nothing happened for a few minutes and then Nippy came out further down the hedge. She was put back at the mouth of a hole and she disapeared again. A few more minutes past and then I heard some rustling in the hedge. Jumping the stream that runs alongside it I landed alongside a rabbit that I thought was caught by the back legs in a net. I grabbed him and tried lifting him out of the hole only to find after a small tug of war that it was not a net holding the rabbit in place but my ferret hanging on its ****. I passed the rabbit to Dad complete with ferret still hanging on and I re-netted the hole. Dad necked the rabbit. The ferret was still hanging on. Nippy took 2 more minutes to let go. I think shes getting paranoid from too many rabbits bolting from hidden holes and doesn't want any to get away because of incompetent ferreters. I also entered Echo one of my polecat jills who works very slowly and methodically to check for any more bunnies but none bolted. Bury number 2: This bury was a pig to net and it took nearly 25 minutes. I decided to work both Nippy and fatty Grace my polecat jill as it was really quite big. All we got to show for our efforts was a single bunny escaping and running along the hedgerow. Grace also slipped her collar but I managed to get it back without too much bother. Bury number 3: We took extra care netting this bury as I hate few things more than rabbits escaping. Nippy was entered again. She took a while to settle into working again and kept popping up in the same 2 holes but eventually she got the idea or it and vanished. 10 minutes later I switched my finder on only to hear an explosion and alot of squealing in the ditch to my left. Nippy had struck again and a bunny was netted coming out of a bolt hole. It had shot out at such speed the peg was nearly dislodged but as an added precaution against blundering humans Nippy tried pinning down the bunny. I got there quickly and necked it. We then sat on the steps outside the club house and watched the game. I got my tub of ferret complete out my pocket for the ferrets and I went into the club and got a bowl of water for the ferrets to drink from from the steward. The ferrets drew quite a crowd and were loving the attention. Now I'm afraid that was all the rabbits we managed to get despit doing 2 more buries however I didn't spend long enough on the last bury as I didn't want it to get too dark to gather the nets up, allow time for a lay up, gut the bunnies and take photos. We went round the back of the club to gut the bunnies where me and Josh did one each and 2 of our friends watched rather interested in how it was all done. Afterwards we went back in the club where the ferrets were a big hit and they must have made 50 new friends in half an hour. Nippy particularly liked the cook who gave her some chicken. It was nice to let the ferrets meet people and dispell the myths about them. Now we are back at home. I'm knackered and the ferrets are asleep. Sorry about the quality of the image but it was taken on my phone and the light was falling. FM

henry d
Nice one Ollie, looks like some nice hedges there ! SS - If you can kill the rabbit then place the ferret and bunny on the ground it will let go quickly as it will know instinctively it is dead(it aint moving/breathing)
Ferret Master
Nippy let go when we just put the bunny on the ground. She was just moving to a better position on the rabbit where there was more meat. There are good hedges there and the photo is on the 3rd team pitch which is surrounded by farmland. Ferret Master
Dad stayed with us for the first bury, picked up some litter and necked a rabbit. That was all he did! He had other duties as the 'limping linesman' for the rugby team and made his excuses so went off to put the flags out and the post protectors up.
