Baldrick
I need a 4x4 (not a pick-up though), and I need to ask the services of the PW knowledge bank. With a likely budget of up to ££7-9k, what do you all recommend? Needs to be a diesel, and acceptable both on and off the road. Defender Discovery Nissan Terrano Isuzu Trooper
lurcherboy
Mitsubushi Warrior for all around work and Defender 90 for serious work. LB
il cacciatore
Dad had a Mk1 Isuzu trooper. Body rust was a problem but the engine just ran and ran and had little if no money spent on engine repairs. Mk1 trooper had 4x4 capacity but can be switched off by the means of those things on the hubs so is better for going about town. The interior of the trooper is cheap but doesn't pretend to be anything but cheap and its functional. My dad now owns a Disco. Engine isn't as reliable as the Isuzu and its had a reoccurring engine oil leak problem. Interior is cheap and falls to bits. Body did rust in several places. Two alternators went within 6 months of each other and they were genuine. Disco has permanent 4x4 capacity. Hope this helps. Never used them off road but remmember trying to go through deep snow with the trooper once and it got stuck with the 4x4 on.

Baldrick
Sadly I don't envisage much need for a PTO-powered capstan winch, White Fox, but that looks an impressive set-up. LB, we've already got a commercial Mitsubishi L200, so I would be looking for something other than a Warrior, not that I dislike them. For some reason the Terrano appealed to me. The 2.7TDi had serious grunt. It's also cheaper than a Disco, as they're far less popular. And I won't be doing any real mud plugging, just pottering about on the shoot and on permissions. 4wd and cargo capacity necessary, capstan winches and roll cages not necessary. I know of no faults with these but would stick to the nissan version rather than the ford despite everyone saying they are identical. It would benefit from a 1-2" lift suspension wise though And you will need a perm LB

Baldrick
OK, not a Terrano. Understood. Current Isuzu Trooper? Or buy a Disco or Defender, and shut up? Can't afford a swanky Tomb Raider version LB....
lurcherboy
It is only just outside your budget and unlike the orientals won't depreciate at a £1000 per hour LB
Baldrick
Fair point, LB, but there's something a bit too trendy and wannabe about all the paraphernalia on the Tomb Raider version. I keep seeing them driven by yuppies in London, not by country folk.

naddan28
sort of related to the story as its a 4x4 horror story... Anyway two of my mates are lifeguards in the summer holidays when off from uni. Last year they were down on a beach and some bloke had took his brand new jet ski into the water on the trailer and got it stuck. So after a initial 15 mins of ummin and arrrring they called the lifeguards, my two friends who could not do anything as the only equipment they have is a 9ft rescue board Unfortunately the tide was coming in so decided to use his brand new 4x4 (but it was not, only 2wd) to tow it out. My friends did inform him this was a bad move as it was only 2wd and they never take anything that is not 4wd with a low range box on the sand. However this moron new best, got it too the trailer hitched it up and then.... dug himself a nice big hole in the sand and went nowehere. So he retreated to the promenade to watch the tide come in... £50k odd gone in one day

Dunkield
I know the original one was just a 4 wheel drive car, but have you seen the Series 2 Freelander? Bloke down the road from me has one and look a bit more serious now, it has proper ground clearance for a start - looks a bit like a smaller version of the RR sport. FREELANDER
Baldrick
Yes, seen the new Freelander, and it does look much more convincing, and like you say, a little version off the RR Sport. Is there any reassurance that the abysmal reliability issues that the Mk 1 Freelander had have now been ironed out though?
