WinchesterDave
I quite fancy doing a bit more with my shooting, and have decided shooting clays competitively would be good. When I join the cpsa as a junior member how do I then start to shoot comps? What happens after I join etc. Probably a daft question but cant really find anything on their website? Cheers, Dave. HDAV
YOu just go along to your local registered ground and shoot what you fancy, your scores get logged and you get put in a class simples.... CPSA website has a list of all registered events
WinchesterDave
Oh thats easy then, so just shoot clays how i normally do but the score gets registered? And then when I go to a registered shoot I will compete against other people with similar scores? I read something on the website about shooting 300 targets, is that 300 targets before I can compete? HDAV
It's 300 before you get a classification so 3 100 bird registered sporting or 12 rounds of trap/skeet etc
WinchesterDave
Okay cheers, nearest one for me is Manchester I think according to the website so when I apply and get my membership just go down and shoot some clays and get them recorded?can I shoot like 30 bird or does it have to be 100 a time to get a classification? HDAV
It's whatever registered shoot they have on. Only "registered" shoots count towards classification and can cost a bit more to enter someone local can probably point out what's in where GordonR perhaps
100milesaway
Go onto the CPSA website and click on registered shoots in the Lancashire area unfortunatly there will not be many. Most people travel to different venues. Coniston and Catton Hall sometimes do registered but if you are prepared to travel, there are sheds full in the midlands. from Auntie. deershooter
Registered shoots have to be at least 50 birds but most will be 100 Deershooter
rogerhoad
Thanks for the replies guys, thinking about doing it at the shooting show, I presume they will be there haha.. Dave They will definitely be there. If you are looking to get a proper classification you will need to take out full membership as the Clubman class restricts you to one ground and your scores don't get recorded. The classification system works on periods. The one that we are in now ends on 30th April and the updated classifications come in to force on 1st June. This takes place every six months. If you shoot 300 registered targets before the end of April in a discipline you can apply to the CPSA for a temporary classification based on the scores that you have shot. If you don't apply or shoot less than 300 you will automatically receive a classification based on whatever you've shot up till the end of April. I would advise you to download a set of rules from the CPSA website and familiarise yourself with them before you enter your first registered shoot. The rules are a bit stricter than on most club shoots. It may be worth your while joining the Shoot Clay Forum, there are several members in your area who ,I am sure, would be prepared to help you. Really helped I will look through the rules a bit more and have a look at that forum thanks! Went on Manchester club fixtures and it says the events are 'open' and it is 'practice' or something do they count as shoots your score can be recorded on? It will say reg if it's a registered shoot. I've just had a look through the registered shoots in your area and they are very few and far between for the next two months. I take it that you want to shoot English Sporting.
WinchesterDave
Ohhhh right :-/ thanks for looking mate! Yeah it'd be sporting I'd like to do. It's going to be a lengthy process I guess before three hundred registered targets are shot then haha! And I can't enter comps without a classification is that right? Yes you can enter the comps without a classification just you will not eligible for any prize money, although some grounds will bend the rules and classify you on the day based on how you did on a selection of predetermined stands. If you're going to Manchester they hold a members handicap comp every month but this is not registered.

As Timps says you can enter the competition, you need to do this to gain a classification. The ground should classify you on the day. This works in one of 2 ways ,they either take your scores over a minimum of 50% of the stands (only the organiser will know which stands these are) and they then apply the current cut off points to your score or in some disciplines they put your score in to the CPSA software and it comes back with a classification. You of course won't know which class you're in until after you've shot. There will be a lot more registered shoots during the spring/summer so don't despair. Catton Hall have a 100 bird registered sporting on 26th January as do Grange farm. Garlands have 100 Reg sporting on 2nd February as do Oakedge. Kingsley Moor on 9th February, Garlands and Oakedge on the 16th February, Catton Hall and Kingsley Moor on 23rd February. Mr Potter
Unfortunately Winchester Dave if you want to start shooting CPSA registered comps and you live in the NW (actually the whole of the North) you have to be prepared to travel. Don't know whereabouts in Lancashire you are but there is only MCSC in the county that has held registered comps. They cancelled the last one scheduled and I would be surprised if they have many, or even any, more. Don't know why but doesn't bother me as I don't like the place. A guy I know lives up North of Preston and he is driving a min. of 100 miles each way every Sunday to shoot registered comps. I think (I daren't work it out!!) that I spend nearly as much on fuel as I do on entry fees and cartridges. Good luck and, as many will tell you, it's an addictive hobby but be prepared to pound those motorways. Mr Potter
WinchesterDave
Thank you Mr potter thats helpful too! Didnt realise that to be honest. 100 miles each way is a heck of a distance
100milesaway
If you visit some of the grounds like Blackpool Kelbrook , Coniston etc you will soon make pals and then share the cost of travelling . Most cars have 3 or 4 shooters in them when they arrive at the shoots. from Auntie.
