1982 Lebanon War and Sabra and Shatila massacre

As Defense Minister, Sharon launched an invasion of Lebanon called Operation Peace for Galilee, later known as the 1982 Lebanon War, following the shooting of Israel's ambassador in London, Shlomo Argov. Sharon intended the operation to eradicate the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) from its state within a state inside Lebanon, but the war is primarily remembered for the Sabra and Shatila massacre.

In a three-day massacre between September 16 and 18, between 762 and 3,500 civilians, mostly Palestinians and Lebanese Shiites, in the Sabra neighborhood and the adjacent Shatila refugee camp were killed by the Phalanges— Lebanese Maronite Christian militias. Nearly all of those killed were women, children or elderly men.

The Phalange militia went into the camps to clear out PLO fighters while Israeli forces surrounded the camps,. blocking camp exits and providing logistical support. The killings led some to label Sharon "the Butcher of Beirut".

Thanks for answering for me.

Here's a quote from a speech made to the Knesset by the aforementioned piece of ****:

“I don’t know this thing called ‘international principles.’ I vow that I’ll burn every Palestinian child that will be born in this area. The Palestinian woman and child are more dangerous than the man, because the Palestinian child’s existence infers that generations will go on, but the man causes limited danger. I vow that if I was just an Israeli civilian and I met a Palestinian I would burn him and I would make him suffer before killing

him.”

Personally, I think politicians should speak their minds more often, it would certainly liven up PMQs.

I'm always amazed at the depth of interest taken in Israeli affairs, indeed, one would think that the UK didn't have enough problems with Irish and home-grown Islamic terrorism without siding with the likes of the PLO, Black September, Islamic Jihad, Fatah, to name but a few. What could be motivating this profound interest? A love of Jackie Mason, matzah ball soup and bagels..?

However, since members have such interest in all this kosher, perhaps you have already bought you tickets for the revival of Fiddler on the Roof?

Some of us are sick of the constant debate on racism while Israel--and its leaders like Sharon--constantly practice it without condemnation by the Western powers, particularly the US, where an incredible percentage of government officials hold Israeli/US joint citizenship.

Clearly, your interest is not kosher food, but instead your ability to translate Mein Kampf from the original German text. The "international Jewish conspiracy" was a delusional invention of the Nazis to increase glass sales by smashing windows across the Reich. Do you also dress up at WWII re-enactment weekends? Something very dashing in black, perhaps?

Flashman - standing up for something that is wrong doesnt make you a nazi, it makes you a human with morals. Just because they are jewish it doesnt mean you have to pussy foot around the problem, it also doesnt mean you are anti-Semitic either. Regardless of faith, it would be still wrong whoever was doing such actions.

I fail to see your point Flashman, I pointed out that Milliband was Jewish...and consequently is sympathetic to the Jewish State.

I have a friend who is a displaced Palestinian, she is now a nurse in this country and the stories she tells are remarkably similar to the horror stories which are regularly dismissed.

My personal view is that the Jewish State is only a few steps behind the Nazi regime in its treatment of the Palestinians and relevant to this thread, Sharon was an active participant in those actions.

You don't have the sense to distinguish between a Nazi and someone who won't accept the way a country like Israel consistently goes against everything that is moral and decent--even ignoring the decisions of the United Nations. Stick your childish jibes, they're not funny and not applicable.

I think the eccentric side show or childish jibes about kosher meat, nazis and hitlers biography - mein kampf is merely a obscurity measure to hide the severe lack of substance that he and his posts bring to this topic. Instead of having a reasonable discussion, he'd rather call you and the other gentlemen a Nazi.... Its childish like you said

I admire the Israelis, they don't take any **** from anybody...Hit them and they hit back..Nothing wrong with that in my book.

True but they didn't take any **** from the British when the waged a terrorist campaign against the British.

784 British soldiers and civilians killed (1945-1948.

The King David Hotel bombing was an attack carried out on July 22, 1946 by the militant right-wing Zionist underground organization the Irgun on the British administrative headquarters for Palestine, which was housed in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. 91 people of various nationalities were killed and 46 were injured.

Sixty years ago British soldiers were trying to keep the peace in Palestine. The hanging of two captured British sergeants by Jewish terrorists was an especially horrific crime that incensed British public opinion.

Nothing to admire I don't think.

Did you read the previous posts? The thread moved from Sharon's dead, to he's a war criminal to it's an Israeli/USA/UK Jewish conspiracy.

And spare me the "faith is no shield for naughty behaviour" because that defence has been used, abused and shredded by every Islamic terrorist outfit in the Middle East, starting with the PLO and Black September.

I fail to see your point Flashman, I pointed out that Milliband was Jewish...and consequently is sympathetic to the Jewish State.

Stop the back peddling, it's embarrassing. I'm mocking you for trotting out the same old guff as the Nazis, that an international Jewish conspiracy controls the world. What next, they're in league with Scientologists?

See above, the international conspiracy continues!

By the way, why do you think the USA backed Israel - apart from the international Jewish conspiracy you promoted? The Soviets/Russian Federation backed the Arabs, therefore it was also strategic decision, alongside that of backing a new State surrounded by enemies who swore to wipe them off the map. See Six Day war, etc for how that turned out, in part because of Sharon.

Stop using big words you don't understand. Humour is an effective way of mocking people whose infantile conspiracy theories embarrass the rest of us.

Trouble is, whilst I can joke about Israelis, Americans, Brits and the Hun, heaven forbid I crack a funny about Islam. We all know what happens then: fatwas, bombings, murders - the whole range of rational "reasonable discussion" you have the temerity to mention above.

And that's the point, really. The Middle East is a complete mess: the Israelis will continue to defend their sand pit and the neighbouring countries will continue to begrudge them any space whatsoever. Typically, I back the underdog - the Israelis - because they're massively outnumbered and have more flair than the others, whose main export is religious intolerance and terrorism.

I never spoke about conspiracies. In this thread, that's your construct.

The thread was about Sharon. He was a despicable person, a view held by many Israelis. Even today, Israel has launched a police inquiry to seek out Israeli citizens who dissented from the mourning and held 'celebrations' of his death. Very North Korean, eh? Even a little Krystallnacht-ish, too?

No back pedalling Flashman.
I find your attitude patronising and derogatry and it is plainly obvious you are an apologist for a quasi terrorist nation.

It seems a common defence to play the Nazi card whenever any attack on anything Jewish is observed....

When I started this thread I was expecting to be put down for daring to say what I think about Israel and the people in charge of it I must say I am pleased to see that I am not alone in my feelings of loathing for them and the way that they have treated all who dared to stand in there way as I have said before I nothing against Jewish people in general it is just when they get to Israel that for some reason they seem to turn in to monsters.

When I read peoples views on this subject my mind goes back to the Lod Airport attack in 1972.

By pure coincidence, the week following the attack, I had dinner with, amongst others, the head of a particular Arab countries London outfit. When I asked the question "how is the killing and maiming of Israeli children justified" his response (and remember that he was an educated man who saw fit to educate his children at an expensive English private school) was that Israeli children would grow into Israeli adults and were therefore justified targets.

I should add that my now departed brother in law was Israeli and served throughout this period. His view, although the polar opposite, were no different to that of the Arab.

There is deep seated distrust and hatred on both sides and what we now need is men of vision on both sides of the fence to push forward a secure and lasting peace in the middle east.

Personally, I do have much sympathy for the Palestinians.

If you really believe the Israelis are like a Nazi regime towards the Palestinians can you explain why 1.2 million Palestinians live in Israel as citizens.

Perhaps its the hope that one day an injustice will be corrected and a Palestinian State created.

Perhaps a more relevant question would be to ask where do you think those who were kicked off their lands and homes to make way for yet another Jewish settlement were going to go.

Ask yourself why those in the Gaza strip are effectively contained in one giant Ghetto and who is keeping them in there.

The people who are keeping the Palestinians in the gaza strip are zealots on both sides, right wing Israelis and groups like hamas who have an agenda all of their own.

As for the injustice to then create a separate Palestinian state, the ones who live in Israel do so of their own volition and have full rights to move where they want when they want, quite a lot live in the illegal settlements/villages set up by Israel.

And most Israelis do not want these troubles to continue and go on , they want to live their lives and get on with whatever as do the Palestinians, unfortunately as above some on both sides do not want this.

p.s I am neither pro or anti any of them

I never spoke about conspiracies. In this thread, that's your construct.

You wrote in support of the Israeli/USA/UK link, you decided to broaden out the topic and don't like being picked up on it. Tough luck.

No back pedalling Flashman.

My attitude is one of contempt for those who spout the same old conspiracy theories. You simply don't like being shown up for a nutter and your last post simply reaffirms my view that your Israeli-bashing id actually something more sinister.

You made a joke about the coffin size, rather than add anything useful. Man up if you have something to say.

For those on here who can read, and we're in the minority, today's Times had an interesting article, which amongst other things pointed out that 1.5 billion Muslims, most of whom wish to destroy them, surround some 8 million Israelis. Perhaps that's why security and land is so important. Or perhaps the Times is controlled by your Israeli/USA/UK conspiracy connection and it's all a lie..

I stick to what I wrote before:

Humour is an effective way of mocking people whose infantile conspiracy theories embarrass the rest of us.
