SussexLad has one in .223 and I have a couple of V22's (The .22 version)

There are varying qualities of examples out there but they are so easy to add to/modify that I don't think you can really go wrong. They are made in this country by the likes of SGC, Sabre, Cactus, Matt Greenall, and lots of others...

There are soo many different set-ups you will find one you like. I am not sure it is the best gun for dropping foxes but it will certainly work :P

I had arranged to collect one this month but I have had to put it back a bit now but hopefully by the end of feb I will have it in the cabinet.

Conor, I have no qualms whatsoever with anyone buying or shooting these types of rifles. However you must consider the accuracy of them and also whether they are the right sort of rifle to take out foxing.

There have been quite a few calls to local plods from “concerned members of the publicâ€, about “strange men in camouflage, carrying gunsâ€, to cause quite a lot of concern amongst shooters.

Can you imagine what the local police would make of an AR15 look-alike being carried by a fully cammo’d young man. Asking for a lot of grief methinks.

Personally I have nothing against using whatever rifle make you happy (as long as it is suitable for the task in hand), but there are those out there who would go apoplexic at the sight of such a rifle being used for vermin control. ;)

OK on a range… :good: …maybe not so good out in the field. B)

G.M.

Graham,

I am just about to go and get the ak47 varient .. from saga... the 103 if i remember.

I am planning on using it for vermin and fox control.

The lands I shoot on ... are safe from the general joe blogs eyes..

I think that it doesnt matter what type of gun you have...if your in camo and carrying a gun and a anti doesnt like it you will have a police visit no matter what!

ok its simmular to a military weapon.. but they could say that about some "normal" rifles. unless you go for a basic everyday run of the mill..... still doesnt guarentee you that the police wont stop by and say hi!

I cant wait to get mine.. but have to wait till april time before my wife buys it for my birthday...

oh and one last point... the twist rate etc are the same (if bought in the right places) as a "normal" hunting rifle.

you just have to do your home work first. I would love a Ar15 but they are a bit too dear for my budget

Using a Saiga for shooting live quarry would be like trying to get a shotgun load into a 1" circle at 100 yards. Lorraine had one and they're a fun gun for target shooting. My advice would be to forget it for shooting at any animal. I'd be surprised at any FLO in England being happy with one for that purpose.

AR 15's (she also had a Sabre Defence XR15) are damned fine rifles but unless you get the target ones with floating barrels etc as opposed to the short special forces type you may have an accuracy problem. Also in straight pull they can have primary extraction problems.

Dunno about your neck of the woods but it seems okay in Scotland to use AR's but using them in England is likely to have noisy helicopters and firearms offices swarming over you.

the one i shot was an sgc ar15 with floating barrel and i shot a 1/2" group at 100yds first time out with cheap factory ammo so i dont think it would have a problem accuracy wise, looks wise could be a bit of bother alright, i like in a very quiet area tho. am lucky enough where i live no one minds shooting really except the odd so and so. the guards arnt the worst either. thanks for the replys lads :good:

on the subject or camoflaged men in balaclavas with military looking rifles and shotguns at large in the wood.....................welcome to my world, the police have been called twice in the last 5 months, i now leave my mobile number in my car in clear sight so when the plod turn up they can ring me so i can come out with my hand up and not get popped by a trigger happy firearms officer! on the last call out i was using a saiga 12 with 5 shell mag (on my firearms cert) and i must of looked like something out of kosovo!

I thought SussexLad had put his up for sale a few months ago?

Oh yes, and the A Team used Ruger M14s didn't they?

Yes i did but just couldn't go through with it

Despite offers i knew that if i let it go i would only end up buying another at some point :good::P

Mine makes a fantastic foxing, rifle long range bunny gun

The only down side and it is the only one is the weight :D

Yes the A Team used mini 14's  no wonder no one ever died in the A Team you couldnt hit a barn door with one of these :P:P

Dave I tried the Ak 103 that I was on about.. it was a great grouping patten.. it has a twist rate of 1:8 I believe. It fired fine and the only down side was the stock being so short... I found it difficult to get my eye right in there at the scope because of the recoil. I would have to change the stock asap .. I am planning on buying one and using it for foxes... I get so angry when you see a CZ or other rifles at over double the cost for a new one... as it is for the ak new.

they only cost less than 400 new... and then you add the sight and the scope mount. and sound mod...

but all in all I already have a sight to go on.. all i need is the scope mount and the sound mod.. and also to change the stock.

They shoot fine to me... Ie I can group well in 100 yards..... ok I was using a bipod that had a weaver rail underside grip to it... and it was great.

So I am puzzled to think why hers is not shooting right.

also what varient of ak does she have.. is it the 102 which I believe is a much shoter barrel and also doesnt perform as well... the twist rate is also much differant.

Got a few questions,

What grain bullets were you using? Whats it handle like and was there any extraction problems? How much is it new? What length of barrel was the one you were using? And what was the group like when you say it grouped well?

I know there were the hunting versions released such as the Valmet hunter and those weren't supposed to be accurate like a sporting rifle but I always thought that could be down to the fact that it was a semi-automatic and that the straight pull would be inherently more accurate than the semi-automatic versions.

Also, I believe the AK-103 to be the one with the shorter barrel and the AK-74M to be the one your talking about but I could be wrong.

edit -

Found a real interesting article: http://www.snipersparadise.com/tsmag/aug2004.htm about accurising an AK-74M.

Cheers :)

funnily enough I was thinking of getting one.. and had made some enquiries, I would be interested in what spec you have. including the can on the front..

I'm after a foxing rifle, the attractions for me are twofold really

is its coated so doesn't rust,

I can run a ARMS rail all along the foreend which means I can move my scope around when using nightvision, and put a laser on it

I hear they are very very accurate,

I'm thinking of a twist of 1:9 so i can shoot 55grains from it.. and a heavier round if need be.

I'm curious to how you have got on with yours and how accurate you think it is and the pros and cons..
