Tollerman
I own a Baikal 28 bore o/u .I recently purchased some semi - magnum cartridges . The standard game cartridges for this gun are for use in a gun proofed at 850 BAR and the semi- magnum at 1050 BAR..The gun only has Russian proof marking 72 MPA.The importers could not give me a conversion. Can any one help please ? Dangerous Brian
If MPA is megapascals (mPa) that would be 720Bar.
wymberley
Mpa is the latest pressure unit. 72 equates to 720 Bar. This would indicate that the gun is quite new. This will be the service pressure, not proof - and it may just be more than coincidental that the maximum service pressure for standard steel shot cartridges is 74 MPa
Tollerman
Very puzzled. The lightest load cartridge I have ( Eley Grand Prix) at 16gms gives the information on the box that " For use in guns with a service pressure of 3 tons "and another Italian cartridge at 21 gms at a minimum of 850 BAR.The 28 gm semi - magnum cartridge states the minimum proof level at 1050.The gun is about 4 years old .Oh for the days when all guns were proofed in the Birmingham or London proof houses. wymberley
Please get this professionally checked. The magic figure is 130% For 12 bore 740/74 service x 130% = 960/96 proof and 1050/105 x 130% = 1370/137 proof as examples. 720/72 service x 130% = 930/93 (I think is the accepted figure) proof. Consequently I'd get the mini magnums checked for suitability. I admit I'm not too sure about 28 bore, but would question whether the 1050 is service or proof. Tollerman
Have emailed York Guns who deal in baikals and asked for the proofing level of the 28 bore.Hopefully they will respond although a phone call to them earlier just resulted in them giving me the figure of 72MPA ! Seemed a bit odd selling a gun and not knowing to what level(BAR) it is proofed.

Guest cookoff013
740 bar But it is a baikal i`ve heard a baikal got blown up 2 seasons ago. gentleman was a first time 'fowler, a single 3" shell in a 2.75" tore open the gun. Gentleman survived, not a scratch. if not alittle shaken. although i hear he has given up shooting.
