tonker
Last year I had quite good results shooting fox's from a tower on my mates dairy farm. Last year I was also asked to try and sort out a fox on a chicken farm (new perm), I managed to do that and the farmer thought I was the dogs A month ago said farmer phoned up and told me he was losing birds again, and could I go over, I went over and was lucky enough to drop a Vixen. He phoned again 2 weeks ago to tell me that there were feathers everywhere! I went over and there were. For the last week and a half I have been there every night.!! I had met a Fox that was a lot smarter than me, no matter what I did he was always one step ahead, couldn't call him, gone like a flash. Any hint of even a headlamp and he was no longer there. He wouldn't even take any bait i put down( I think Farmer was begining to think that i wasn't quite the dogs anymore). So in desperation I put up another tower to see if that would work, I saw him quatering across the next field the other night. and he disappeared into the hedge, ten minutes later the dogs on the next farm were giving it some, so i figured that's where he had gone. Another ten and he was coming back, so I sat stock still behind the camo net and watched he kept about 200yds between us and worked his his way through the hedge and sat and looked straight at the tower, I couldn't move as he was looking my way.I kid you not, Ive never had it this long before but we both didn't move for 40 mins. Then he just upped and sauntered away, not a care in the world. I didn't go over the night before last night but the farmer's son said he had been coming in grabbing a chicken and maiming not killing it, legging it to the hedge dropping it and then coming back for another. The Vixen was then picking the hedge chicken up and they were off with two birds. Tonight I doubled up on the nets and got there early, set up for the long term with lamp on the 222 and night vision ready for the17. How he did it I don't know ,as i was looking his way all the time ,but the first I saw of him was the last 5yds of his run for the hedge with a bird flapping it's wings maddly in it's mouth. I swore like a trooper at myself for not seeing his first run, then remembering what the farmers son had said.Set myself for where he had disappeared, and waited, I thought he had gone, but after 5 mins I caught a slight movement it was only his ear but he was back. I don't know about you but when a plan comes together I have a job controlling my breathing and my heart is going 19 to the dozen. Luckily I managed, and as he came up out of the ditch and out of the hedge he was 50 yds away. I have to say a magnificent animal, very big and in superb condition (it's a shame they are such killers) Cross hairs between the eyes and slowly squeezed the trigger, I took a head shot as I thought he was so big he might not drop with the 17 and run some,(didn't want that) Anyway it worked a treat and he dropped on the spot. I've never been so chuffed. He had taken weeks to get, now I'll have to get the vixen before she starts bringing the cubs. Sorry for the war and piece epic, but I thought he deserved it.
