Ballie
As some of you will know I have just bought myself a 17hmr (Anschuetz 1517). I want to get a reasonable scope and some mounts for it and I would like some advice on some of the less expensive scopes, the reason I ask is because I have only ever used Schmidt and Swarovski hunting scopes but I feel the reticles on these are to big for my needs (and I am not paying out for a S/B PM) I have seen the Leupold range and I don’t like them at all. I have about £300-£350 to spend and I am looking for a 40mm lens with a reasonable magnification so that crows at 150 are achievable. Oly
What's up with Leupold?
Ballie
What's up with Leupold? Oly I don't want this to turn into a debate, each man to his own and all that, Its just that I feel you pay a lot of money for a Leupold and I personally don't think the optics are worth the money you pay. Lurch
, Its just that I feel you pay a lot of money for a Leupold and I personally don't think the optics are worth the money you pay. Wow. First time I've heard that said, especially from a SB user.

Ballie
Reticle in front or rear focal plane: front Reticle in front or rear focal plane: rear it says this on the Meopta web page http://www.meopta.cz/index.php?id=140&lang=en# I can't remember which is which but if your ret is in 1st or 2nd plan it will make a differance to the zero. one will keep zero no matter what mag you are on the other will change the zero as you adjust the mag (because the cross hairs get bigger) can anyone tell me which is which? Thanks for the advise guys its nice to know what others think before you part with your cash, I think to answer to my question I now need to go and look through some scopes, Burris, Nikko, Meopta etc.

I am surprised for the money these scopes cost that there is a change in zero when you go up to full zoom for example . I had a Tasco 6 x 24 x 40 third world class varmint scope locked down in a vice ..........When I zoomed up from 6 to 24 I watched the cross air travel NE ................But for £95 what do you expect

I have 2 variable scopes, one with the reticle in the first image plane (objective-sided), and one with the reticle in the second image plane (ocular-sided). Whilst your statement that the reticle is magnified with a scope with the reticle in the first image plane - the zero DOES NOT CHANGE - that would render the scope absolutely useless as a variable if you think about it Meopta's are supposed to be great scopes for the money. Ballie
Ive, I have had it on good authority that these rimfire thickness gauge kits are very good and sorting your ammo out into 3 or 4 batches can tighten your groups dramatically. deadeye ive
Due to being bored one night I actually got out my digital scales and weighed a box of 50 individual .17 rounds ........I never recorded the results on paper but the variations were shocking ........I also concluded the there is only 5 grns of powder per charge ...............Never used a rimfire guage so can't comment . I think I need to get out more
