deeksofdoom
I have three dogs at the moment all bitches. An 8 year old GWP, a 7 year old Springer and a 3 month old Dropper pup (Setter/GSP Cross). The springer had a litter of pups about 3 years ago and took to the new pup straight away, the GWP is tolerant of her and there are no problems there. The Springer and the pup have been curled up together since day 1, stone mad about each other. The springer is mothering her better than her own pups and she was a great little mother to them aswell. Thing is now though she has started to produce milk and the pup is having a grand ould time of it eating dry food and suckling away.I have no problem with it just wondering just when will it stop, I'm asuming the Springer will get sick of her in time. Anyone have any similar experiences. Its a very happy little kennel I have out the back at the moment.
ditchman
i have heard of a dog coming into milk when the kittens prefer the attention of the dog to mum........i dont think it is a problem and once separated the dog soon dries up.... big bad lindz
It has taken the breeder time to wean the pups of there mum, if your bitch is now producing milk I would not encourage her to feed the pup. It probably wont do any harm but if it goes on for a long time I would ask the vet what to do and maby the bitch can be given something to dry her milk up. We currently have 3, 6 week old Golden Retrievers and they are little monsters and we are trying not allow the mum to feed as much as they are eating well on a wet/dry puppy food. We are going to be keeping one of the pups so we may also have a similar problem.
Actionpigeons
Is there no way you can keep the pup separate? I too keep a few dogs and breed from them. When ever I keep a pup back for myself I like to keep the pup separate until it is a least six months old. 1st to stop what is happening now with you 2nd I find pups bond better with me if kept away from the other dogs most of the time, as they tend to blend in as part of the pack if put in with adults from a young age. Just my opinion and what I do. ATB Edited May 15, 2014 by Actionpigeons

Leave them together and she'll be giving her milk for a long time to come
WGD
Yup, got to separate them. If you do and cut down the bitches water intake she'll dry up in no time. Let it go on and the habit will become a big problem IMO.
