IR driving system

After crashing into bails due to driving the stubbles last harvest with no lights, I've been thinking about mounting a 7inch monitor on the dash directly behind the steering wheel.Mounting a detachable EJ230 or an E700 board camera to the roof bar of my shooting truck.IR source could be from my lightforce 170 with an IR filter fitted as I need the NM800 IR on the rimmy.I would like some views on the filters for the 170 as they run at about £40.Do they just cut down the light or are they worth the money.Or would a couple of cheap security ir flood lights mounted to the bars do the trick( ebay do em relativley cheap and state they illuminate to 40/70 mtrs or even a T20 on flood).

The idea being that I can drive round and use the monitor to see and also pick up eye shine then stop and fire up the NV/NM800 IR on the rimmy to identify and shoot.

Or am I just off my nut,lol

simple answer is do what I have done for a mate of mine,,

get the 700 camera with a 12mm lens, mount it in a box then have extension lead12v running to a cig lighter, use a t20 torch on a suction mount or other method and run that from 12 volt also,

I,ll send you the part you need for the torch to run it from 12 volt and connect to any size screen,

we do this on one of our perms and it has proved excellent as we drive round the whole estate with no lights on just looking for the eye shine then pull up and shoot,,

with the 12mm lens you have a cracking field of view infront of the vehicle, a 7inch or bigger screen is best, its weird the first time you drive the vehicle with it as judging distance through the monitor takes some getting use to

let me know if ya need any help mate

And good old evo has donated a cable to power the T20 from the 12v dc splitter.

Last of the parts came today, ready to test, hope this T20 IR meets up to expectations.Everything runs from a 4 way dc splitter apart from the T20 IR.Camera and monitor perminatly fixed and powered at the turn of the ignition. Just simply stick the T20 IR to the windscreen in seconds and ready to go.

Going to get another monitor for the passanger to use for spotting while I concentrate on driving.Hope to test tonight, it will either be ok or go tits up lol

UPDATE,just got back from testing, still alive lol.Very strange driving in total darkness just using tbe screen however visability is very clear with distance poss 140mtrs.Never took the rimmy it was just to test the 4x4 NV.

looking good mate,,did your items arrive ok as I sent them first class bud

cheers Evo

Cheers evo that was very generous of you, they came today but the tip on my soldering iron is goosed so will wire it up tomorrow.Been out round the perm tonight just for a test and its great, little weird but I'll get the hang of it . Really impressed with the T20 though, gona order another tomorrow, the zoom in zoom out is mint.Actually like it better than my NM800 IR(never thought I'd hear myself say that)so gona stick one on the rimmy.

Where have you got your monitor located.I put mine behind the visor so it just flips up out of sight. The camera is that bloody small you cant see it where its located.

I am just on testing the battery now in the T20,its one from my NM800.Its been on continuous from 12.05 and its hasnt dulled yet.If I get 2hrs continuous running time it should do for 4-5hrs shooting and I have 4 batteries.Plus during harvest I shoot from the 4x4 so I will only use the monitor on the rimmy if the rabbits are in the IR of the 4x4 and that T20 will be hard wired to the car.

a little tip ,,,if your going to be leaving the T20 on for long periods of time then drill a couple of holes through the main body to let air flow through as the oslon IR gets very very hot and you will need to cool it down so air moving through the torch will certainly help, the T20 is a cracking little torch and perfect for what you need it for because of the zoom facility as you can widen the beam when your driving,,

I have situated the monitor over the rear view mirror using metal clips so it just hangs on it but tightly,, its hard at first driving using the monitor but you get used to it after a couple of times and it will be the best thing you have done because the amount of land you can cover in a vehicle by night is unreal compared to doing it by foot and the best thing is its all done in darkness

Just remember to switch of the monitor when driving on the road if you get pulled they will do you if its on and the driver can see it

but a brilliant idea all the same

we only use the units once off road and driving through the fields, understand where your coming from though, once we get anywhere near a road its off with the monitor and torch and on with the lights,

also I have tried putting filters over the lights on the vehicle,,does not work anywhere near as good as with the T20 and the monitor, when your covering acres of land it works superb of a night and you can get very close to the rabbits and they don't even know your there,

we have been that close with some of them we have been well in air rifle ranges,

Decided the move the monitor and camera today. The problem I had with the monitor on the sun visors was it was too close to my face so I needed my glasses on.Plus I kept looking under it for reassurance of where I was. After mounting it on the dash and opting for a different lens I am now getting a true picture of what my eyes are seeing if I looked down the road. After tests in daylight and on waste ground I can judge the distance correctly, because previously with the 16 &12mm lenses the distances where magnified so looked a lot closer than what they actually where.

I have also mounted the camera on the rear of the screen so it all comes out in seconds, plus if means I can also use it as a hand held.

Medic128,

Mate its a doddle to do yourself . Sure24.co.uk take the ir filter out for you and a lens of your choice is supplied. You just need a 7 inch monitor and a T20 IR and a bit of imagination.

I run everything off a 12v accessories extension from the rear accessories socket in the back of my 4x4. This runs through my car to the front of the dash whereit has a 12v dc male end, attached to this is a female to 4 male splitter so I can power the camera,monitor,T20 and a spare to run poss a dvr or something.

£114 all in?

If you where local I would of been more than happy to help you, but to be honest I know nothing about electrics but with a lot of advice from the likes of evo, dave g and rolaids in the states I am hooked.Give it ago mate and if your stuck, evo and dave g are usually reading the threads and will be straighf there with guidance.

Thanks davyo, think I'll look at making a project out of it. I don't need the ir torch as I've got that sorted, just a power lead to feed both camera and monitor, and then obviously the actual camera and monitor. Do they come with mounts or are they bought seperate?

The monitor is £19.99 off the bay (281343724320) it has a quick release mount and a head rest mount, which is what I 1st used when I had it mounted on the sun visor.Just make sure you buy from uk, mine came next day.Nothing wrong with China or Hong Kong but you wait ages.I ordered motors for flappers and they took 7 wks. Sure24.co.uk are amazing, I have had a few bits off them,I ordered at 3pm and got it next morning free delivery.
