kennym
I'm Thinking of Swapping/selling my CZ sporter for a varmint barreled gun Mines a CZ 452 with a shortened 14 inch barrel and a boydes thunmbhole stock (which I'd like to keep) I like the heavey barrel because it's parrelel & better to put a torch on Anyone owned both guns? What's the best way? Is it to get a second .22LR on my ticket ? Edited June 6, 2014 by kennym
bicykillgaz
I have the 452 varmint in .22lr, I'd stick with your current gun. The barrel on the varmint is not parallel it's tapered same as the standard it's just thicker. I'd mount your torch on top of your scope not your barrel, there's far better options available. Also the varmint has got one action screw and a barrel lug where as your American has two action screws so your stock won't fit.
Catweazle
I too have the 452 Varmint, and for field use I can't see any advantage over the normal weight barrel.
Brad93
No difference between the varmint and spotter until you get them on a bench. Then you're grouping clovers at 75 yards with Winchester subs £4.10 a box. Imagine what it could do with some match ammo.
kennym
thanks Guys FYI the boyds stock i have on is cut for a varmint barrel I'm told the sporter will fit the varmint stock but not the other way round, I want to under barrel mount the torch to avoid glare from the mod. bicykillgaz
As I say mate they've got different bolt configurations, you'd have to drill new holes to suit so it's possible but a pain. What type of torch are you using and what scope and mod? .22 mods are usually tiny so glare can only be caused by using a torch mounted too far forward on your scope with too wide a beam on it. I've used dozens of different types of scopes with various mod combos on my .22 but never had an issue with glare off mod whilst lamping so my money is on a positional issue. A picture of the set up would help. I'd honestly stick with what you've got, I love my varmint but if buying again I'd probably go standard. Edit- forgot to ask if you know exact model of gun you have. If I remember correctly when I bought a replacement action bolt kit the 452 comes in varmint, lux, silhouette, style and a few others that have the same bolt configuration but the American and a few others are different. Could be possible yours will fit. A picture of the underside of the stock showing all bolt/screws would be easy enough to tell if it will fit. They could have been referring to the barrel channel on the stock rather than the bolt set up when you asked. I actually have a single 410 with a tapered barrel that I mount a torch below the barrel on for around the buildings use at night, I just put a few wraps of electricians tape around the barrel till I got yhe desired diameter for my clap to fit

Must be something wrong with one of yours, then, because mine shoot equally as well as each other.
Dekers
Must be something wrong with one of yours, then, because mine shoot equally as well as each other. From my experience, I have yet to find a difference in the field or on the range!
Dekers
Seems a bit extreme to change the rifle due to a lamp issue. There are many ways to mount lamps and many ways to address moderator glare, this issue has been well discussed over many threads!
bicykillgaz
From my experience, I have yet to find a difference in the field or on the range! I'm guessing one rifle must just prefer winchesters but he's running both the same ammo. My dad has had the lux, a 16" American and a sako quad and I use a 452 varmint and with their preferred ammo all if them shoot equally well. I'll never understand why he chopped his cz for the sako as other than aesthetics and been a couple of hundred pound poorer there's no difference in the field. stan68
just put a strip of electrical tape on the bottom of the objective lens stops all mod glare
