28 bore bismuth homeloads

Recommended Posts

Evening all just wondering if anyone has a proven receipe for the above mentioned, my son's gun is only chambered for 65mm cartridges and the only factory shells I can find seem to be all 70mm. Was looking to buy some bismuth 5 shot and just wondered if anybody on here has any facts/figures etc. cheers

Only trouble with size 5 shot in a 28 bore is lack of density in pattern, unless you up the weight to 20 or 12 bore loads, you will have less space in a 65mm case aswell.

What is your intended quarry and shooting distance likely to be?

I like a number six shot load up to 26g but 23/24g is nice to shoot.

Pm floating chamber and cookoff13 they will probs have something or point you in the right direction.

Could you not get a 70mm one open it up and copy it in a 65mm case.

Figgy

Hi figgy the quarry will be ducks as my son has got in kings lynn wildfowlers so foreshore shooting on splashes over decoys so shooting distance will be as close sporting wise as possible. Was only thinking 5 shot due to it being a touch lighter than lead but 6 would be ideal for widgeon and teal. The biggest 65mm lead factory load I can find is express 21grams so might have to do what we've done before and buy some of them and replace the shot with bismuth.

I can't find any bismuth loads for the 28. Steel, hevi etc, no problem.

You'd be just as well having a word with clay/game. They're bound to have some data.

Have you considered ITX?

Cheers Motty I'll try them soon, the only reason I thought bismuth was because my sons gun is an old Belgian sxs but I'll have a look at itx

Just looked in BP small bore manual, it appears the stumbling block is the 21/2" loads of 2 3/4" stuff

Thanks for looking kent think my dad and me made a cock up not checking the chambers when we bought it as it certainly has limited cartridge choice in an already limited selection!

An 2.5" RTO case? ... 64.5 fired v 2.75" crimp at 69.7 fired.

We have some express 21grams seeker that are RTO's so they would be the choice for maximum amount of non toxic

Seem to remember that bismuth uses standard wads? ... Gualaudi produce them for up to 28gm of lead in a 28 bore (!!!). since the internal volume of the 65mm RTO and 70mm crimp are similar it should be possible to find a wad to suit?

Whether it's an appropriate load I know not, but C&G may have data, since they carry those items?

For other non tox shot TPS do 28 bore wads but I guess that's + shipping from the US?

Whilst I don't currently have a need for nontox 28 gauge the day may come! ... I did have a conversation with Mr C about the shot long ago.

Which wads for Nice shot?

Any wads for nice shot, barrel friendly, thats why it can be very economical to reload smaller gauges, as there is a premium on these anyway.

there is reloading data out there, and for 28gauge too.

what loaders are advised to do is load up a normal recipe or recipes 1500psi below maximum pressure...

either way think of it like this, normal "cheap" components, just very expensive shot, comparable to factory bismuth? maybe alittle cheaper, i havent done any price breakdowns...... but at 3/4oz - 7/8oz loads, its not going to break the bank...

750grams of niceshot, will do 36 shells. thats £1.5 in shot alone.... eley bismuth is £1.4 a pop at £36 for 25 shells.

Get him a semi auto as he will be able to shoot bigger loads without the punishing recoil. Also cheaper steel shells will be the diet for it.

I shall certainly second that The Winchester is available and the Hatstand comes in a shorter stock youth version. The 20 is a capable fowling gun especially for duck over decoys and capable of firing some goose loads, best of all you will likely save long term by buying steel instead of the dear stuff!

maybe load up some niceshot? loads like for like with lead, same downrange performance.

its the easy option, not the cheapest.

Thanks for the info guys but just wondering if having to buy stuff from the US and nice shot etc would be worth the time and expense when I don't know how many times we'd be going to the marsh

Like the idea of a semi auto for wildfowling, nearly got him one for his first gun but for teaching a beginner we went down the route of a break barrel and this 28 bore came at the right time. I've seen the hatsan 20 bore youth model Kent but do I dare ask are the opinions the same as it's bigger brother? Which model Winchester are you talking of? Your both right if we get him one steel would be the starting point.
