JohnfromUK
Don't ignore 2nd hand. There are some good binos - and for much less than new, but do check they focus properly and you can bring the images together correctly. (When dropped or damaged the alignment can get disturbed and each tube then covers a slightly different area). Also - if you wear glasses - check (new or second hand) that the eye relief is suited. That is the distance between the back of the bino eyepiece and where the image is correct. I wear glasses and struggle with less than 15mm eye relief. Some binos are as low as 12 or 13mm. Glasses wearers may have to remove their glasses on these types. Believe me, its a pain to have to keep removing your glasses and they can so easily get damaged when off. Full Pelt
In your price range clean secondhand Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 or Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 would do all you need and easily outglass any budget Minox. A lot of the Minox views you see posted are from follow-my-leader Minox fanboys who may not have made any direct comparisons with their kit. This from a binomaniac birder : “I can say that every Minox I've ever used has been a moderate to severe disappointment, and I have sworn off that brand forever. Yes, there will be somebody along here soon enough that will tell me that they love them, but I certainly do not, and would not ever recommend one. At every price point they are found, there is something else that is better.” Well worth shopping around and trying a few.
steve_b_wales
As I mentioned in a previous reply, Hawke Nature Trek are excellent. If you get a chance to look through a pair, I'm sure that you will be impressed.
