K Mac
Hi I looking for some advice on shooting feral pigeons on a new permission. They only go their for a feed not to roost and they go about in flocks. If I try decoying them will that not teach them not to come to a decoy patern. I have never shot ferals like this before thanks for any help. Cheers K Mac
Cranfield
If you have ferals on the crops in your area, just set up as you would for wood pigeon and they will turn up. I don't think they are the brightest of birds, they don't seem to become wary of decoys. When they are not on the crops, but in and around the farm buildings, an air rifle is your best bet. The Essex Hunter
Hi I looking for some advice on shooting feral pigeons on a new permission. Around my area they love to hover over the flapper, I don't shoot them for a few reasons...... You cant be accused of shooting tame pigeons ( I don't give the bird lovers any quarter ) "In Britain the shooting of collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and the feral pigeon (descended from Columba livia) is also permitted all year round. The stock dove (Columba oenas), rock dove (Columba livia) and turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) are all protected species and may not be shot at any time." Game dealers wont take them so it is a waste of a round... For my money the ID side is they are all quite close, so far easy not to shoot them than pole something crossing out of the corner of your eye... There have been quite a lot of posts from people with there bag lined up for some one to spot a stock dove mixed in with the wood pigeons.... Good luck.... Dr D
I shoot them round farm buildings, but never if I am out after woodies. Simple reason. They are daft and fly round and round your pattern, increasing the movment and give the woodies confidence to commit to the pattern. Of course, once you shoot a woodie they fly off, but usual reappear quite quickly.
