What gun?

I'm sure this has been asked a squillion time before but I had a quick look and couldn't see anything related.

Thing is I've had my first visit and I fairly confident that I'll get at least FAC air and shotgun so I need you guys to just point me in the general direction of what to look for in a shotgun. I quite fancy clay pigeons at some point and of course pigeons and I'd like something that I'll still be happy with in a couple of years time. Money is a slight issue because I have to find an FAC air and maybe a .22LR as well. I know the basics and how the chokes work but know nothing about cartridge sizes and loads so can you help me out lads? If you don't fancy typing there must be some good pages you can link me up to. Thanks. Paul

have you shot shotguns before?

most common is 12gauge,typical load 1oz of shot(28gram)...if clays mostly then as per Fenboy over/under typically selected. For clays small shot(which means bigger number) ie 7.5/8s.For pigeon rough shooting shot size 6's. The most important 'basics' are safety and gun handling......what shooting have you done? fyi choke is only important on internet forums...don't get hung up on chokes at this or indeed at any point!

You will need a budget of @ £500 for a sensible 2nd hand o/u,see multiple other threads on what to look for...but really go shoot/have a clay lesson or 2 prior to buying a gun.

Thanks guys. So it's o/u and the load sorted then.

Perhaps I said too much? Let's do it again.

I'm looking for names to look out for, barrel length and why, how to avoid buying a dog. Best cartridge brands and are there some guns that won't use them, etc.

Main thing to look for in a shotgun is fit, if it doesn't fit don't buy it. Then it's down to what you shoot, a mc gun covers most bases but don't discount fixed choke for sporting clays pigeon and game use. Steel shot is a future issue but normal steel loads can be shot through a gun without steel proof through 1/2 choke safely. I would allocate your budget 1/2 shotgun, 1/4 .22lr, 1/4 FAC air realistic budget for a decent OU (used) is £500 bargains are around for under £300 but you need to lucky and probably not ideal as a first purchase as there are some dogs out there

Thanks fellas. Something to go on there. My quest begins.

By the way, when I was in late teens (waaay back when), I learned a bit about fit and tried snap shooting my .177 air rifle without aiming and just looking at the target about 20yds away. Target was about a foot square and to my astonishment I hit it more times than not. Paul
