DIY Gun Cabinet

Check out the relevant BS beforehand as it specifies things like internal non-forceable hinges IIRC and min 2 mm plate. My memory is rubbish however.

I made one 40 years ago out of folded 3 mm steel plate and used yale keys turning a steel 'finger' behind a sheilded internal fold - a bit like an internal U.

As far as I know its still in use today by the farmer I gave it to. I made a smaller (shorter) one for ammo which bolted to the top of the first or could be separately bolted to a wall. Cost me about a £5.then.

Just a matter of then slipping it inside an outer wood cabinet which butts up to the fixing wall ?

all i know the cabinate needs to be steel....spec'd thickness and 2 x 5 lever locks......i did think that the hinges were not to be exposed or visible...but i might be wrong on that...

what you "cover it" in dosnt matter a jot....

good seasoned hardwood is soooo expensive now...you would be better off going to a housclearance sale and picking up a 1920-1960 wardrobe which go for pennies and can be made from solid oak or mahogany...then strip it all and shape it to how you want....and add brass period fittings to it......saw a really nice one someone had done...it was a full size wardrobe the cabinate was in the bottom half and the top half had shooting clothes in and a fold down table set with baize for cleaning the guns on......the brass fittings were new but aged ...by putting them in an oven and burning the laquer off then putting in a plastic tub with a few drops of bleach and left to go green over a few days...then buffed up.....

I like the cabinet, you say you got it for a steal, how much was that?

Did you collect it or was it delivered?

Presumably the next stage is to build a large steel box to fit inside the oak cabinet.

To design it with the correct type of hinge with a return in place so that the door could not be removed if the hinge was ground off.

A pair of the 7 lever locks you have ordered and the correct style of welded mounts.

What gauge of steel are you going for?

How many guns do you hope to store in a monster like that?

As Tightchoke says its looking very good. The cabinet was a good find. Presumably you will strengthen 3 sides and take off the back ?

I am surprised I remembered the steel thickness etc.

Have you decided on where its going yet, as it would wise to meet the advice in the pamphlet but difficult to meet its recommendations downstairs. Might be worth getting agreement to its future location with the FEO first - you might reduce the metal if it has to be carried upstairs !

Good luck and keep the progress reports going - this is v interesting.

I used to do quite a few steel gun cabinets but now there are so many making them at so little money its not worth it, I do think some of the Bespoke type timber over steel are a bit too heavy on the price front but sometimes thing sell better the dearer they are.

Intersted to see what you come up with, how are you handling the differences in the door swings or are you just putting the steel safe inside with a second internal set of doors? Effectively just hiding a gunsafe inside the cupboard?
