Just look at them! listen to them! I am a working class working man. where is my representation? They really couldn't care less about me, never had even a leaflet through my door! Here in South Wales Labour is for the non working classes. Benefits and sickness is the way to a life without work.

Are you saying that all Labour voters in South Wales don`t work? The mind boggles.

Labour spend too much, Tories cut too much, Labour spend too much, Tories cut too much, and so on...

I haven't been around as long as some PW members, but with some idea of what I'm talking about, it seems to me that Atlee's government was the last one that properly served the British people.

I spoil my ballot paper in the knowledge that 99% of politicians are self-serving or power-wielding oddballs. It is a genuine disappointment for me that I have no one to vote for. A party that can mediate between and represent the needs of both business and unions, one that can negotiate with the EU for our benefit, and has the balls to leave if it cannot be achieved. One that recognizes that those on lower incomes and those who are vunerable deserve more help, more infrastructure and more benefits. One that treats the NHS as priority number one. One that knows that dumping Trident while increasing Defence and Intelligence staff is a more appropriate way to meet current threats. One that forces energy companies to invest and develop renewables that will actually be able to serve our needs when oil runs out. One that protects the Green Belt and wider environment rather than stimulating the building trade. One that admits that the current housing crisis is caused by demand from first time buyers, not for artificially expensive 3+ bedroom houses. One that realizes that London should cease to be the centre of the UK, and encourages investment throughout the UK. One that is committed to regeneration of deprived areas. One that does not provide tax havens or legal loopholes that enable companies or individuals to avoid paying tax. One that is 100% committed to eradication corruption within public services and private business. One that is willing to reform the education system, providing more vocational training during and after KS3. One that realizes that working from home is more environmentally friendly and cost effective than commuting from city to city on High Speed railways. One that recognizes that provision of fibre broadband to the entire UK will stimulate small businesses. One that commits to improving democracy by decentralising Government, and handing power over to county, town and parish councils. One that recognizes that agriculture and manufacturing are as important as the banking and service sectors. One that encourages sensitive land management, not agri-business. One that recognizes that taxation of the individual should be relative to income. One that solves poverty in the UK before providing aid abroad. One that supports producers over retailers in retail. One that nationalises care of the elderly. One that comprehensively protects freedom of the individual. One that believes in a total, top down reform of British law, policing, justice, prisons and rehabilitation, to include more provision of cells to enable tougher sentencing. One that is totally committed to improving Britain, not managing its decline. Well, that's what I'd like.

RossEM, that is an entirely reasonable post and one of absolute merit.

The reality of what you have suggested is that everyone would have to share that same spirit of reason and be prepared to compromise their own desires and accede to the desire for the greater good for all.

The reason why we have polarised parties, although that is perhaps too great a description of the differences between them, is because we have polarised sections of society that want things their way. Our parties represent the competing elements.

I am no great supporter of our current crop of politicians and neither am I an apologist for them, but our political parties are simply a reflection of society at large. I don't believe that they are the architects of how society behaves, they merely try and moderate or shape that behaviour.

For a generation we have had ambivalence around our political system which, to my mind at least, has bread a mediocre group of politicians. As our society becomes more pointed, for whatever reason, so will our politicians.

I agree with your take on things towards our political representatives, but the other parts of society have to subscribe to embracing the same set of values too.

I'm afraid you're living in cloud cuckoo land with that vision, but as you spoil your ballot paper it's all pretty irrelevant really.

I'm of the opinion that if you're not idealistic, you'll only achieve things you can put up with, rather than things you actually are satisfied with. One of the reasons that people my age are disengaged and disinterested in politics is that democracy is not within their grasp - this is the fault of our first past the post voting system and centralized government. I'm cynical because I have a vague interest, whereas most of my peers couldn't give a toss. I think that as the Welfare State has created a relative state of comfort for most people, the less interest there has been in democratic process. Most people are chuffed with a low paid job, tax credits, Sky TV and cheap beer - why should they fight for the betterment of their country when they're quite comfortable? I'm sure that for better or worse, the destruction of the Unions has had a large effect on this. People have less reason to fight, less need to make their voices heard. As a result, those in power have less need to placate or fight for their constituents.

On the upside, the vote for Scottish Independence has stirred things up and it seems that English people are slowly waking up.

In the meantime, I'll spoil my ballot paper because I have no faith in the main parties - a spoiled ballot is still a counted ballot, so it's not wasted. What I said above would be irrelevant if I didn't register to vote.

Ha! If only we would be taken seriously...

I believe the biggest single barrier to any future British government serving the people as they should is their continued servitude to the Banking industry. Unfortunately you're labelled a Socialist or Luddite if you agree with this viewpoint, even if like me you consider yourself right wing.
