big bad lindz
On my small syndicate shoot yesterday I managed to nab my first really really high bird and I was given praise by the 3 other guns who missed it. I wasn't on the best peg for the drive, technically I was the back gun in a long narrow section of a field between a high wooded bank on the right and some mature high oaks & maple trees on the left. The other 3 guns were closer to the end of the field nearer the tree line that the birds were being flushed from. The previous birds that broke were quickly taken by these guns and got nowhere near me. When this cock bird came out I thought the same would happen but after 6 misses it was up to me. The beating team thought when they heard the volley of shots that a large flush had gone up as we had had a bit of a poor day. I initially thought gosh if these guys missed it what chance have I got as I know they were really experienced game shooters. I have only been shooting game for around 4 seasons and that's mostly been walked up rough shooting and this is my second season in this syndicate. Boy did I hit it and was I chuffed. What height was it you ask, well when speaking to the guys afterword they said by the end of the night and a few drams, or when I tell the story it would be a 70 footer, in reality it was flying as high as the mature trees so I think it would be in the region of 45-50 foot and going like a bat out of hell. It made my day (a late Christmas pressie) and what I thought was a great gentleman gesture was the other 3 guns shook my hand afterword and said well done. I suppose its birds like that gives us a pleasure and makes you want to come back for more.
Blackpowder
Yes gives you a glow does it not. I had six double barrel misses on a small day two weeks ago then it so happened the last drive and the last pheasant of the day flew over me at a considerable height to fall dead to the first barrel. Phew! Blackpowder
JDog
Did you mean metres rather than feet?
shootgun
Did you mean metres rather than feet? I'm sure he does... or yards perhaps. I wouldnt shoot at a 15 meters high bird on a driven day.
big bad lindz
Yes it should have been yards rather than feet sorry
Alycidon
Well done, you will remember that bird till the day you die. Stood next to a young lad yesterday when he shot his first driven game birds, very high winds, hail and thunder, not an ideal first day but he put a few in the bag nicely.
