Columba Grey
Hi I'm new to pigeon watch. Winter rape is not commonplace in NI and I have located just one field 1hour 40 mins from me where the birds are using it; a best guess of about 200 birds on the ground and in the trees. I shot it on Saturday week and again last Friday. A low return 12 & 10 birds respectively. Is it a bad idea to shoot it again on Monday week (10 day break) or should I leave it? If I don't avail of the opportunity others will who are closer to the area. Would welcome your enlightened opinion.

loriusgarrulus
Welcome to Pigeon Watch You might get more replies if you put your question in "Talk from the field" as the pigeon shooters might not spot this in introductions. lakeside1000
Hi, once a week is not too much, pigeons dont have memory as we do, just survival instincts, if they are overshot they will get very twitchy and move on but chances are your not shooting at the same birds anyway, they can range out several miles in search of food and as the large flocks break up for the breading season the smaller groups will come in more confidently, get plenty of movement into the pattern with flappers etc, dont blast at far off difficult targets, pick your shots , this way you will increase your hit rate and cause less disturbance to birds in the area. good luck and welcome to PW. JDog
Shoot the field when pigeons are fighting into it in good numbers rather than a calendar date.
Columba Grey
A warm welcome .....thank you all and sound advice. JDog . Your advice makes good sense and I would love to have the luxury of shooting only when the birds are coming steady unfortunately I have to book my days and then travel. Last week the journey to this field took me 2.5 hours each way! Rape is not as widely grown particularly in west of Northern ireland. I have some eyes on the ground but nothing beats being there yourself to assess numbers patterns location etc. good news is they shouldn't be put off simply by my returning to the field after 10 days😃.
