Easy Reloading .223 for a Novice Using Lee 50th Anniversary Edition

Recommended Posts

Hi Hunters,

Before I continue I would like to say I am a complete Novice at this and in no way an EXPERT.

My Savage Axis .223 is very bullet fussy and only really like Hornady VMAX out of the box. A friend of mine offered to reload for me and the accuracy increased 10 fold.

Unfortunately I am very impatient and didn't enjoy having to wait for someone else to re-load for me especially when you are down to your last 5 rounds so I decided to look into doing it myself.

The local gun shop (Sporting Supplied - Bloxwich) were selling the "Lee 50th Anniversary Reloading Kit" which was £119 so I decided to give it a go.

Thanks to Youtube I managed to load my 1st batch of ammo but felt there isn't many amateur videos online for people like me who really just want to get started so I have uploaded some of my videos for you to view.

holding your bullets to seat , have you chamford the brass enough? on the second vid did you zero the scales? and trickle each powder throw up to a precise load?

to do vids on you tube bud you need to know your onions or you could cause/influence someone to make an error.sorry so negative mate but be carefull.on the posative note its a great hoby you have started.

Thanks Mike that's good to know. Where abouts are you? I am in sunny South staffordshire.

Well I'd give you a gold star for effort :) at least you're enthusiastic and have made a start.

My tip for you would be "dump the scales". I think Lee make some excellent products but the scale isn't one of them. Your video of zeroing the scale is a perfect example of why I'm not a lover of this scale. Now I know a lot of reloaders use them and I know they can be very accurate but they are fiddly to adjust and damping seems to be variable.

The damping on your scale appears to be particularly poor even compared with the usual Lee scale, it should come to rest in just a couple of swings.

Here's a short video I made about the new Hornady beam scale - It's another low budget scale (but not so low as the Lee) Just see how it compares to the Lee for ease of operation - I have a few "scale" video on my youtube channel.

And here's one at the other end of the spectrum.

if possible dont use mixed brass stick to one make as they all have different size inner chambers or brass thickness so some might shoot different

I know I was very lucky.

luck has nothing to do with it fella

people will tell you that without a laboratory and £5k of equipment you can't possibly hope to hit a barn door

a huge proportion of reloaders don't weigh powder they throw scoops

equally they wouldn't know where the lands are in their rifle, let alone how many thousands of an inch the OAL needs to be to be "on them"

if it shoots well and you are safe don't start trying to re-invent the wheel

well done and welcome to the hobby you will be spending all your spare cash on!
