loriusgarrulus
Or a stripping comb. A the weather gets warmer his coat will get a bit long and straggly looking. Just get the ends of a few hairs and give a tug. If they come out easily he's ready for stripping. Whatever you do don't use clippers or he will lose his waterproof top coat. I stand mine grooming table but on a non slip mat on a work top will do as it will do your back otherwise. Just do a bit at a time over a few days, so he doesn't get fed up or you. The Mars coat kings are great for getting dead under coat out, but don't over do it as it is easy to thin out the coat too much. You can use them on spaniels and setters too. There are some good videos on YouTube on stripping border terriers.

Scully
I use a stripping comb on my Border because I find it takes too long to do it by hand. I have two grades, a coarse one for the body and a fine one for the legs and head.
pontbeck
Hand stripping is not difficult if the coat is ready to come out. As has been said above take the coat out over the course of a few days so not to sicken the dog. Don't attempt to strip around the nether regions or belly as that is most uncomfortable for the dog and can have dire consequences to yourself
Mike737
On ours we used to use a carding brush. Flat pad with bent wire 'bristles'. Pulls out the dead fur, thins the coat and leaves the live, healthy stuff. Sadly lost him a few years ago, aged 17. Mike.
Berettacocker
Used to use a cold cut saw blade, very effective .
