Scully
It is obvious from what you write that you have knowledge of the ways in which depression can effect people, and as I have some knowledge of it myself totally agree that the sufferer is largely unaware, ( apart from a peripherally haunted understanding that something isn't right ) but I think we're possibly in danger of venturing off topic here. My brother in laws debts were much less than £3.1 million, and the bank that called in his debts was the HSBC (which he's still with despite my protests) which I'm sure wouldn't have noticed if the debt had simply disappeared, but I still couldn't justify a two tier dispensation scheme; one which existed for armed services personnel but none for civilians. I don't think my argument is with you, nor yours with me, but rather we should all be arguing with our politicians, but we wont, because none of us cares enough to make a difference. Sadly. STOTTO
If they were fraudulently claiming it - and knowingly so - Yes - pay it back with a stretch in the glasshouse thrown on for good measure. However, they were not, they went through all the official processes and this got added to their pay. There is not a self service portal where you go and tick "I have completed xyz" to generate and extra £1K on salary or an extra £100 in your packet. Going back before Pay as you Starve, mistakes would happen around your food etc... and that would be claimed back (or paid back when pointing out you had been on leave) - that would be a simple administrative cock up - fair enough. But these guys (and girls) followed everything by the book - but now they have changed the book. Legally Correct - Mirky (taking into account MP's expenses which really isn't a good analogy as most MP's knew they shouldn't be doing it) Morally/ethically correct - not a hope. Perhaps the compromise that should be taken would be only for the past financial year to be repaid as the previous years books have been balanced?? It has ever thus been so, once the MOD has established the position of the goal post to the satisfaction of the ordinary service man/woman it immediately moves them to serve its own purpose. ‘Policy adjustment’ or an (Administrative Error) ‘sleight of hand’, to claw-back that previously accepted as a given! ordnance
I would support the fire service, police and ambulance and other emergency services in a similar situation, just for the record. This would be tax payers money well spent in my opinion. No one makes them join any of these organisations, if they join they know the rules and risks if you get overpaid you pay it back, just like everyone else has to.
