JDog
I was set up on some drillings by 12:30. I knew that the hide was in the wrong place, facing into a strong wind, but only after 50 birds had by passed me without a shot did I move. The next hide position felt better but although there were lots of birds about none decoyed. Instead they flew in all directions and quite a lot 'whiffled down' which I could not understand as the wind appeared to be strong in one direction. Only when I shot a few on the flight line could I work out why they were finding it difficult to get into the pattern - there was a huge vortex in the field and I could see this by watching feathers from birds which had hit the ground, some of which appeared to go against the wind. Decoying can be difficult in these circumstances. So I concentrated on the flight line and I set up a net on long hazel sticks which I cut from the nearby wood to hide behind in addition to the stone wall and a scrubby bush. I took in the rotary too. The reason I got the yips? More than 25% of the 'pigeons' coming along the flight line were Stock doves. I would be crouched down and then jump up at the last moment to shoot only to find that the incomers were the wrong species. I hesitated too long when the real thing came along and my shooting suffered. It was a very enjoyable afternoon but 32 picked from 82 cartridges showed not only how difficult they were but also how badly I shot. The yips did not help. motty
I know how difficult it can be when there are a lot of 'other doves' around. Still, you shot a decent amount and it sounded quite enjoyable.
aga man
Good bag in the circumstances JDog, I too saw a lot of stock doves whilst decoying yesterday, frustrating at times.
pigeon controller
Well done sounds a good day. We have one farm that has lots of stock doves and it can be a pain to shoot. We had a number of hide positions this year that have suffered from the vortex effect . It make you think what's wrong with the set up as they vere away. You did the right thing to move and it paid off in the end, again well done.
kyska
We have stacks of them on our land, we really need to concentrate, it's easy with a magnet to identify them, but when it get fast and thick over decoys it's hatd.
