fieldwanderer
My memory's appalling these days and I'm not old enough to blame my age Have any of you managed to find an easy way to remember the open/closed seasons for the dsc1 please? I can pass the practice (general knowlage) tests I have every time but this is making the difference between passing well 95-100% and just scraping through at 80%
LeadWasp
For England and the open seasons............ Large blokes are Alcoholics Anonymous (August April) The Girls are Next Meeting (Nov March) Except Roe buck which are April Fools Or CWD which you just have to remember are a summer no no. I was always doomed over Scotland and worked out that I could probably drop a ******* over them and not put a pass in too much jeopardy. welshwarrior
I use the method above as well but prefer a diary in real life!!!! Scottish dates well you only normally get 3 Scottish questions so you've got room not to know them IMHO or just look for the dates with 21 in near the England and Wales dates for a guess. fieldwanderer
Cheers chaps, and good to see I'm not the only one going senile early! In "real life" obviously there's plenty of ways to double check, just need to have a good enough idea to make sure I pass
scolopax
Deer seasons Too long in England, too short in Scotland.
Dunkield
..and continuous when you have plenty of muntjac
chrispti
I have a terrible memory for dates so I will also struggle on that :0/ I do have a little card with all UK deer species and their dates in my shooting wallet.... Don't really see the point in having to remember them, particularly the dates in other countries....
LeadWasp
I'm starting sentences and forgetting the point I was trying to make - only 47 years old too! Edited March 16, 2015 by LeadWasp
fieldwanderer
I'm starting sentences and forgetting the point I was trying to make - only 47 years old too! I'm only 32! I worked at a place for 18mths where I was high as a kite for at least half of each day on thinners - can't help but think it didn't do me much good
LeadWasp
A few years back some lads in an industrial unit near mine worked with plastics fabrication. If you stopped for a chat with them the fumes coming off their clothing burnt your throat. It was disgraceful of their employer, no TWA's or any H&S measures really. Strangely enough the owner is a multi-millionaire now............... It all depends on what was in the thinners, some are pretty harmless. Often chronic low level exposure is more damaging than short high levels. I think a lot of modern forgetfulness is down to stress or preoccupation - worrrying about the DSC1 seems quite common on PW ha ha!
fieldwanderer
Yeah, h&s was non existent at this place too. We'd be cleaning stuff in the oven at 85 c, splashing thinners everywhere (including ourselves) often smoking at the time while the stuff hissed on the hot floor and a mist rose from it. That'd be two to three times daily for around an hour at a time. My girlfriend could often smell it on my breath the next morning! Was reclaimed cellulose thinners so could of had anything in it really. Anyway, back on track, I didn't get the bit about roe but can remember the rest easy enough which just leaves roe and cwd. I'll try to get at least a rough idea for Scotland but Welsh warrior's put my mind at rest a bit with his post.
LeadWasp
Well the Roe bit goes like this. The does are still 'Next Meeting' like the other larger species females i.e. their open season is November to March inclusive. Roe bucks are April Fools in that their open season isn't like the bigger deer (Alcoholics Anon - August-April) but April to October. They are open season when the girls are closed. I hope that helps - personally I'm in agreement with everyone else that I wish we'd be allowed a crib! Good luck with the assessment - have you got a date lined up? I was on the phone this afternoon to a mate doing some sort of tree survey near Reading. He was talking quite loudly on the phone to me when a munjac doe popped out of a hedge line not 70yds from him, wandered up to within spitting distance, clocked him, then just trotted off. As he said.....never, ever when you actually have a gun on you!!!
fieldwanderer
No, no date as such - the plan's to give myself a couple of months with the U.D.D dvd then do a course + assessments to try and make sure there's no issues, I'm already quietly confident but want to do all I can to avoid disappointment, extra cost and lost time. It was the April fools bit I couldn't get my head around, I found myself blankly staring at the dates thinking "well, it's not April to February....." Munties, I've tried and tried but I've yet to see one on my permissions - though I see them occasionally when walking the dog in the neighbouring woods and often see their little hoof prints where I shoot! welshwarrior
CWD are all in Next Monday with the big girls 1 November to 31 March
The Mighty Prawn
Tells you something about the human brain that these mnemonics are so powerful to remember, just a few useless things I know thanks to mnemonics I can't erase from my mind... Father Charles goes down and ends battle - order the sharps appear in different key signatures on a treble clef musical notation - times used since school - 1 Many very early men ate juicy steaks upon no plates - the order of the planets including a bonus a to indicate where the asteroid belt is - times used since school - a few pub quiz questions Richard of York gave battle in vain - rainbow colours! Any other useless info scarred into the brains gang? Ps I'm not saying the deer thing is useless! Just how effective mnemonics are
LeadWasp
wow oh be a fine girl and kiss me right now or soon - the classification of stars, the g in girl being one for our own sun, a G2 class star (I'm such an anorak with a furry hood)! activeviii
Terrible at remembering dates. Will never shoot in Scotland so can't understand why I would need that. but then I don't agree with a DSC and the way some people thing they are better than someone that has been in the game a long time. But that's another thread, hang on, that's an old thread hehe If you can remember the dates then look them up on internet then store in mobile under their name and the dates for the number. LeadWasp
Well ain't that the problem with qualifications - they are only ever a MINIMUM standard.....and then of course voluntary becomes obligatory...just like an ID card! There's nothing like a lifetime of experience to humble us before nature. I may be misinformed but didn't the BDS give evidence after Hungerford that they saw no reason for semi-automatic rifles...................................... welshwarrior
Having just taken the DSC1 exam last weekend, don't think it makes me a better stalker it highlights a few points and highlights best practise, but the I'm new to stalking compared to others only been doing it around 20 years I'll know a lot more by the time I'm old and grey.
fieldwanderer
I hadn't even thought of it like that to be honest, I'm only doing the DSC to try to make sure my variation goes through nice and smooth when the time comes (although I'm less than impressed at these little clauses the police keep dreaming up). THEN I can start learning to stalk, the theory I'm learning from the DSC1 can't hurt but a good read through the book would've done the same job. fieldwanderer
Just a quick thankyou, the little rhymes have made quite a big difference It'd be good if I can remember the scottish dates now too, I'll try but not too worried about it
John_R
In Scotland they don't take the girls out till 21:15.
LeadWasp
means a shorter period to have to shell out for their drinks heh heh (and before anyone beefs I'm a Stirling lad......but not an Aberdonian!!).
