mikewareing
I have just re entered the world of shotguns after a 40 year lay off. I have been into air rifles for some time and have made several Bullpups. Question................ Would it be legal to convert a bolt action 410 into a bullpup design? Obviously without modifying the barrel and action! Regards Mike

fenboy
Yes as long as the barrel is no less than 24 inches.

fenboy
And min overall length is complied with I think the minimum overall length only applies to semi auto and pump action guns.

mikewareing
When you say bullpup what sort of dimensions are you thinking? To put the bolt just above the butt pad. and to leave the action and barrel unaltered. Edited April 15, 2015 by mikewareing
Guest Mick.j
To put the bolt just above the butt pad. and to leave the action and barrel unaltered. Unless your putting a scope on it, i cannot see how this will work. A shotgun is not a rifle and is not used like one. They have a proper stock for a reason

I would say your be fine , but if you really want to be sure run it by you FEO , I would have thought it would be ok , HOWEVER , as already stated the "over all length " only applies to semi and pump . but im just wondering IF your licencing dept. may class a bolt action in the same category as the semi/pump ( self loading ) , got to worth a call ? would be very interested in the outcome of both the project and what you FEO has to say , atb

Andy H
A bolt action shotgun as long as it has a smooth bore barrel of at minimum 24" and a non detachable magazine that can contain no more than two cartridges has no overall length restrictions , You could even put a pistol grip on it although you would need one hell of a holster for it. spandit
Sounds like a fun project - I'd like to do the same with my Anschutz .410 as it's really long
welshwarrior
Interesting project are you looking to shoot flying targets or static? The reason I ask shorting the whole system will make it swing erratically the red dot will also encourage aiming not pointing, all effects better suited to shooting static targets like rifle shooting. The bullpup rifle allows an easy to control stable rifle with the balistic benefits of the longer barrel. Shotguns gain no ballistic benefitts from the longer barrel but they gain a handling advantage with momentum.
mikewareing
It will be for use in the wooded area of my perm for squirrels 90% of which will be shot static. I already use a red dot sight on my hushpower (both eyes open) with great effect, it is just too long! Mike
