oozelumbird
Thought i would do a quick post to help anyone looking for a good gunshop in the North West. After the sad closing of Claytime i was forced to look for another suitable gun dealer, I found Bamfords to be a very good shop, maybe a little crowded for my liking but still a good place. Premier Arms near Skipton, in my mind a very poor shop. Ive rung them a dozen times, and they never have stock of anything. Last time i went they had 2 shotguns, thats all!. They were a good price though. I then heard of Malmo Guns in lancaster, near enough the same distance as Bamfords for me so i went over, 3 minutes from Jct33 M6. What a great great place, loads of guns to suit ALL budgets, pump actions from £125!!!. Loads of cartridges and clothing and there friendly, plenty of space etc. Ive been twice and think they are very good. Just wondered if anyone new of other RFD within the North West. jon0881
Ok, the ones ive used in the NW are; Bamford - well you have already been there McAvoys - family run business, think all his daughters work in the shop and they know their stuff! Rainford Field sports - also a petshop, not bad place Centrevine - near soutchport, sells all kinds of stuff I cant really say a bad thing about any of them really, at some point i have had a long conversation over some kind of gun or shooting. Gordon R
I know the former owner of Malmo Guns - Malcolm - top bloke. Went recently - changed hands - for a 32" Trap gun. Phoned first - said they had too many to describe over the phone. Arrived to find less than half a dozen - Mate Mark said it was three. Won't be returning. Target Sports Bolton - not recommended. Shooting Shack - opposite Target Sports. McAvoy - not bad. Stensby - Manchester - very good gunsmiths. Few South Manchester. Graham GDUK who runs Gundeals Auction and Forum usually has a few guns and has plenty of shells.

Oly
There is T & J. J. McAvoy in standish i have never used them myself just heard the name and seen the website Website Link T & J J McAvoy's were the cheapest in the country from my Anschutz & definately know their stuff, very helpful! Friendly bunch of folk at Malmo - can be a little pricey though Bamfords are a good bunch too - wide range of stock in their tardis of a gun room! There's a new one in Grange over Sands too - small but friendly, basically a diversified fishing shop. Same goes for the gunshop above the post office in Carlisle opposite Kings town. Batemans in Stafford are OK too...if you class that as the NW still
Gordon R
It really depends why you want to go to the shop. If it's for Guns, then Bamfords have the most (400), McAvoys have about a quarter, but are decent people to deal with. Other Gunshops - Bond and Bywater Preston, better still Entwistles at Preston - decent shell prices and guns / trade-ins are very fair. If it's a gunsmith, I would use Stensby's in Manchester or An RFD in Oldham (Cheap and very good). If it's accessories - Target Sports in Bolton, although I don't like the service or lack of it. Cartridges - GDUK Gundeals does Victory at very decent prices.
Lancs Lad
Target sports stay away. Tim Mcavoys is OK, but small....not a big selection of stuff in, can order it in no problem but if you want to browse and buy there and then it tends to be a struggle. I live just round the corner from there. Made purchases from both Tims and Bamfords though, tim sold me my beretta AL391, and my lanber from bamfords. Tim tends to have a fair amount of Rimmy and Centrefires. Small selection or airguns And maybe two racks of shotties. Tim and the girls are really helpfull and Ive parted with a fair amount of cash over the counter..

Gordon R
Mike Meggison of Kelbrook sold me my first gun as an adult. Had one before as a teenager. The gun was cheap, but he has moved way up market since the Shooters Gunroom, in Blackburn. Nowadays - a bit pricey gun wise. Agree about Tim McAvoy. Never bought a gun there, but browsed a lot. No pressure - just didn't have what I wanted. Bought shells - cheap enough. Nice people.
BlaserF3
How about a mention for Bond and Bywater in Preston. I have been dealing with them for years and have always been satisfied with their prices and attitude
Dead-Eyed Duck
I've used Tim McAvoy for years - he will price match anything that you will see elsewhere. Don't want to think of how much cash I have parted with there. The main problem is that the shop itself is a bit short on elbow room, but the stock is OK. Target Sports - my two experiences there have been a bit disastrous....... Bond & Bywater - nice people but it is a bit out of my way. Bamfords tend to sell the classier stuff - mainly shotguns. Bought a few from there, and have been OK. Don
Gordon R
I've had mixed dealings with Bond and Bywater:- 1.First gun I bought from them was brand new. Went to Stensby's to get chokes altered. They noticed a flaw inside the barrel. Straight back to Bond and Bywater - they were less than enthusiastic in taking the gun back and refunding. Gap of 15 years. 2.Bought a Browning 325 - got a good deal. 3.Went to trade in a nearly new Browning 525 - kept trying to fault the gun - "went over it with a microscope" - they could not fault it. Very disappointed by the attitude. Didn't deal and I won't go back.
BlaserF3
Just curious, did you buy the 525 from them?
Gordon R
No - bought from Bamfords. It had done very little and was still quite tight. Bond and Bywaters repeated more than once that it seemed to have done little - I was not sure what point they were making, but decided against filling in the gaps in the conversation. I felt uncomfortable dealing with them and will not be doing again.
BlaserF3
I would have thought that had you bought the gun from them, that they would have been more willing to do a deal. Or they could have had a few in stock already.
