MrDaveO84
Can anyone recommend a breathable jacket or smock for stalking so it must be quiet. Doesn't have to be warm as I use my old Barbour Northumbria in the winter or I'll wear a fleece under it. I have a jack pyke jacket I'm using now and it's awful, I feel like I'm swimming when I'm wearing it. I've been looking at the ridge line jackets but can't find many reviews. Just seen I've posted in the wrong section as well Edited May 27, 2015 by MrDaveO84
m greeny
I have the ridgeline mallard and sweat like a good un in warm weather but the jacket i keep using when its warm (and cold i just layer up when cold) is my good old cragghopper kiwi goretex and even in long walks and warm weather stay dry. 2 years its been used and abused and has yet to leak. Doesn't even have to be warm to sweat in the jack pyke I was out Monday just taking a nice stroll around the perm and when I took the jacket off I was absolutely drenched. I know that no jacket is 100% breathable but there must be better ones out there. Thanks for that I'll look at that craghoppers

MrDaveO84
Cheers harnser...I used to always wear army surplus jackets and trousers when fishing as they're great but when I'm shooting I feel a bit nervous about wearing military camouflage just in case someone calls the police Just looking on evil bay at military surplus there's mtp smocks on there in light olive that look pretty good and cheap, any servicemen on here know what they're like? They look like they will be noisy to wear for stalking but at 30 quid I may take a chance Edited May 28, 2015 by MrDaveO84
Rst1990
Deerhunter do a good range in breathable jackets my friend swears by his. I myself have the jack Pyke jacket like you, but tend to take it off when I get hot so don't really suffer with the sweating problem. Most jackets are designed to keep the heat in etc Perhaps a long sleeved t-shirt might be good?
hedge
Similar to the Helikon - any `softshell` jacket will be a) very quiet and also b) more breathable than many other tops. I have 2 for mountain biking and running (bright colours) and 1 green one for shooting. I still get hot when exercising but you don't get the same `boil in the bag` as you do when in a full waterproof (even if they claim to be `breathable`....) If you are stalking then you shouldn't be running around too much. I know it's hard to gauge. The other option as you've mentioned are some sort of military smock or top. A lot of them are pretty lightweight and quiet.

The thing I find with the jack pyke is that I'm not actually feeling hot enough to take it off but when I do it is absolutely wringing wet inside and even undoing the zip doesn't help. When I'm stalking like others have said your not rushing about (usually I rush everywhere) but even just taking it slow and easy you sweat like a **** in the jack pyke. I would just go for a long sleeved t shirt but I like to carry everything in jacket pockets if I can, maybe I should get a rucksack. I'm looking at a surplus type jacket as well Edited May 28, 2015 by MrDaveO84

I'll have a look at the soft shell jackets I've seen a few about but wasn't too sure on how waterproof they are but to be fair I'm not too bothered if I get soaked when stalking just after something that provides some protection from the rain

Soft shell is different to fleece and a good inbetween product. You can get posher brands (North Face etc) at a higher price but the fabric is much the same! Wasnt a silly price either. L
MrDaveO84
This is what I was looking at but that material looks like it's going to rustle a fair bit. Hope it's ok to post eBay links http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=221626801693

Fleece liner with a not very breathable outer = boiling hot. Not sure on the fabric as it may be quieter than it looks.
robdab
I bought a aigle huntfieldy from uttings which was massively reduced a few weeks ago purposely as a winter jacket . I've used it three times lately due to showers when I'm shooting it's fairly lightweight and breathable two large pockets on the front with hand warming pockets and a large pocket on the rear for game can't fault it and it looks the part for general use. This is what I thought, it doesn't look like it would be too warm though with just a t shirt underneath it, but didn't really know about how breathable it would be. I would've thought it would be quite good seeing as its military issue I bought a aigle huntfieldy from uttings which was massively reduced a few weeks ago purposely as a winter jacket . Milo
http://www.schoffel.co.uk/for-women-c3/jackets-coats-c27/sch%C3%B6ffel-ketton-packaway-jacket-tundra-p362 For the last four years or so I have used one of these all year round. Just a shirt underneath in the summer or with a couple of layers in winter. Had masses of hammer and still indistinguishable from new. junglebert
I just got a Musto Fenland, it's a great jacket, very light weight, waterproof and breathable, packs into one of it's pockets, I love it.
Savhmr
On the cheap, I bought a lightweight cotton summer jacket, printed through (vat dyed) with the CADPAT pattern. It's tough, does the job and you'd hardly know you were wearing it. Now starting to appear as surplus stock as well as these copy CADPAT jackets: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Bulle-Green-CADPAT-ACU-Shirt-/171781159142?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item27fef478e6 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fusion-BDU-Military-Jacket-CADPAT-Ripstop-Cotton-3XL-XXXL-DJ-3-/271445837211 The pattern does an excellent job at breaking up the outline, better in studies than conventional woodland or DPM from longer distances too. No need to part with a lot of money for an effective jacket solution. These are very quiet in use, do not rustle, are tough and breathable. shalfordninja33
I'll have a look at the soft shell jackets I've seen a few about but wasn't too sure on how waterproof they are but to be fair I'm not too bothered if I get soaked when stalking just after something that provides some protection from the rain The helikon softshell I have is made of something Called sharkskin it feels quite slippery and whilst I've only been out in light showers I have yet to get wet in it. Pretty much windproof too. For the money I can't fault it, zips are strong and the stitching seems really good. Different models come in different thicknesses. If you have an army supply shop near you they may stock them.
