scorpius
I am in need of an air rifle, max range required 30/50yds, powered by CO2 small disposal cylinders, can anybody offer any advice on what make and an estimate of cost, how reliable are they. This will be used to control a rat population. Thanking you in anticipation.
Underdog
Forget co2! Get a decent springer.
Carman06
Could look at cross man rat catcher
chrisjpainter
Could look at cross man rat catcher At 50yds? I'm with Underdog. Forget the idea of CO2. It's not cost effective and the power is too susceptible to temperature change. the cost effective method would be a springer.

hyflier
I know of reports claiming the SMK QB 78 and XS78 are capable of these ranges using CO2, but as the previous replies have suggested CO2 is susceptible to temperature changes resulting in poor performance. These air rifles also guzzle CO2 like it's going out of fashion apparently. So do your research and please make sure that what you choose is capable of a humane dispatch at your required range. Savhmr
@ 12ft-lbs, irrespective of pre-charged, CO2 or spring, you're limited to ranges of between 25 and 40 yds (head shot) with any sub FAC air rifle for humane dispatch (forget 50 yards, its too far for a sub FAC air rifle and shooting animals at those distances is simply inhumane), the most important aspect being accuracy. CO2, as has been said, can vary in pressure with temperature therefore I would have thought that it wouldn't be the most consistently accurate air rifle, so not what I'd choose for hunting. I would advise anyone wanting a no-nonsense quality hunting air rifle to buy a TX200 every day of the week, very consistent, very accurate and British made too! For rats, I've often heard it said that a good 0.25 springer (are they still available?) is the way to go. hawkfanz
have had a Crossman co2 forget it,can start off low and go low on power very quickly not a lot of effective shots,so any number of springers will do the lob better
bruno22rf
Rats are tough creatures-a 50 yard Roland is near RF territory.
