Southfields
Just started to work on our new pond for this season over the last month it's formed a skin of green algae over it & there aren't as many ducks using it now. Does anybody know how to get rid of it ?
FalconFN
In the short term manually removing it by twirling sticks in it and lifting it out will work but long term you have to reduce the amount of nutrients in the water and limit the light, so plant trees to shade it and don't over feed fish, ducks etc. Fertiliser run-off can make it much worse too. fenboy
Sink some bales of barley straw around the edges.

Works really well

fenboy
Shade, pump and ultra violet filter. You would want a hell of a filter and UVC for a flight pond !
FalconFN
I'm probably mistaken bu I thought barley straw was for green water and not blanket algae?

fenboy
Just got to get a bigger pump boy... I'm probably mistaken bu I thought barley straw was for green water and not blanket algae? It will help with both ,though it would work better as a preventative rather than a cure .
scotslad
As fenboy says we used to just put a few bales tied across the inlets to the pond every spring before anything showed and u never really had any bother. There would be odd years if we were late getting bales in or early warm spell alagae would build up but bales soon sorted it.
norfolk dumpling
How big is the pond - posts above suggest views from garden pond to large flight pond?
