Paul T
A new one on me so thought I'd ask for opinions on here. I've had one of my cocker bitch pups returned and I've got a new home lined up (fingers crossed). The problem is she insists on piddling in her crate, which is like to solve before she goes. Never had a dog do this - they always keep their crate clean during the night, but this little madam doesn't. In fact, she will even come out of the garden to pee in it, so it's now locked during the day. I can chastise her during the day, but during the night she will go anywhere in the kitchen if left out. Lock her up and she'll go in the crate and happily lay in it! She doesn't whinge to go out like other pups might. This is the first time crate training has ever failed me, so ideas appreciated. fenboy
Have you tried to make the area she has to sleep in as small as possible , they normally like to do their business as far from the sleeping area as possible , reduce the area and it may stop it . Paul T
Correct Fenboy, which is the whole idea behind crate training. She will do it and then lay in it. Never had a dog do this - They'd sooner yelp and get you up to let them out.
Paul223
What happens if you leave the crate door open and give her a bed away from the crate, does she go to the crate to take a leak and kip on the bed?
Paul T
What happens if you leave the crate door open and give her a bed away from the crate, does she go to the crate to take a leak and kip on the bed? Difficult to say - There are other areas she can sleep in the kitchen (big sofa and 2 chairs which are all for dog use) plus other beds on the floor, but she'll still pee in her crate if it's left open during the day. If I lock the crate she'll go inside or outside - wherever she feels like it. Bless her, she seems to have got really confused in the time she's been away. Tonight she's left a nice boating lake with a walnut whip island in the middle, just in front of the aga. Kitchen door to garden is open, but she really doesn't know where the appropriate place is to go. I can feed her and take her outside and she'll go. 30 mins later there's a puddle on the kitchen floor! I know she's just missing that connection/trigger between the need to go and where to do it, but I just can't help her make it.
Paul223
She's obviously learnt that the crate is the place to go so I'd be tempted to go with it and put news paper in the crate then look to moving the crate closer to the door and finally outside, possibly getting her used to sleeping in a small bed and not messing in her bed or on the kitchen floor and getting used to going for longer periods before being let out to the crate Sleeping in a crate would not be my main priority, not sleeping or lying in her own wee would be the main priority! Maybe someone else will have different ideas Edited July 13, 2015 by Paul223
Danger-Mouse
Was she kept in the house or in a kennel at her last home?
bruno22rf
We have a Springer that used to do pretty much the same-all we could do was go with him outside and go overboard with praise if he peed-even gave rewards, if he went indoors we would growl at him and not make eye contact when he looked for reassurance-took a while but he's good now. loriusgarrulus
I had a dog that used to do this. We had him as as a rehome as an adult. I put a belly band on him with a sanitary towel in it to absorb any wee. Used to take it off and take him outside, then put it back on. After a while the towel was coming off dry he was house trained. You should be able to get something for a bitch.
Paul T
Was she kept in the house or in a kennel at her last home? House, but she spent long periods of time in a large crate, which is how I think the problem has arisen. Maybe someone else will have different ideas You're right, but I don't want her piddling in the crate at all, so I removed the crate completely and put some paper on the kitchen floor in the area that she has used in the past. During the night she has just gone on the paper. Obvious thing is to just move it closer to the door over a period of time. Thank God for ceramic tiled floors. Only thing is now my dog pup (who was house trained) also used the paper during the night *sigh*. We'll get there - thanks all.
bruno22rf
Might seem a bit obvious but have you checked if she has picked up a UTI or something?
Paul T
Might seem a bit obvious but have you checked if she has picked up a UTI or something? I haven't, but she's not piddling all the time. I'll bear it in mind, thanks Edited July 14, 2015 by Paul T
