Thinking of starting hunting and looking for land before I go out and

Recommended Posts

Hello there, I'm thinking of starting shooting/hunting and I live in Bowdon in Cheshire close to altrincham. I would love to start and I have got my eye on either the air arms tx200 hc or the hw97kt. The only trouble is I don't want to spend money only to find out there's no where to shoot with permission that's fairly local. Any help guys would be great. Plus out of the two rifles which would be more suited to hunting etc.

First off all you need to learn what you can and can't shoot legally with an air rifle. I would also suggest joining basc, then you will have insurance in place. Then when you approach a farmer asking for permission you can say you are a member and this may help you. Dress semi smart when you go door knocking and just say that if possible you would like to shoot your air rifle on his land. There are lots of threads on the forum where people have asked the same question as you so have a search and then plan your approach to local farmers.

Be prepared to get knocked back by many farms before you get permission as this often happens. Or you may get lucky quickly.

Remember you never get a second chance to make a first impression. So even if you get told no by a farmer stay polite and maybe leave a card with your contact details on. You may get a call from him one day.

Good luck

I would say you need to get your eye in on targets first, get to know your new rifle, different aim points depending on the distance, nowt worse than wounding an animal with no chance to finish it off!

+1 with Wilksy. Google "free rifle targets", there are hundreds to choose from. Learn to shoot at different ranges, start at 20 yards and move out in 10 yard increments to see where your point of impact is. As above don't go door knocking looking like Rambo, it won't work. When you get lucky and get a permission do everything by the book, i.e. closing gates, don't leave litter, etc. If you make a good impression on your first perm it can lead to others coming your way. I started with a 200 acre permission and now have over 4000 acres and I have never asked for it, I have been invited. Make a good impression and word will get around that you are ok, make a bad impression and everyone for miles around will know. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum!
Perhaps it may be an idea to find your local airgun club.... this is what I did, learnt to shoot properly on the targets and got chatting with plenty of people... I even got a few people there take me out on their perms so I could see what it was like. May help especially if it takes an age to find somewhere plus also you'll talk more confident about shooting once you are in a club (which you can name drop)

Ok sorry to burst your bubble but if its hunting land you need get a shotgun and join a syndicate or club. Strangely if we discount rats etc. then getting land to use an air rifle to hunt is way harder than having a shotgun .22 LR or centrefire. Sounds dumb but I promise you its true.

Your easy commute from Manchester and Liverpool and other major areas of habbitation and shooting land and rights will be hotly contested and mostly paid for via rental or outright purchase.

Once you are a member of that club or syndicate you will find that you will turn down more air gunning opportunities than you can possibly take up
