when we were fitting both new track rod ends onto steering tube we always fitted right hand thread to rhs of veichle and vice versa for left so if one went and we knew the vehicle we knew which hand it was handy if your keeping the vehicle also drilled and tapped the flat top of the track rod end to fit grease nipple, surprising how little grease the non greasing track rod end has ,when all fitted and tracked up and clamped grease the end of tubes and slots to stop water ingress,

just been into the garage and took it all apart and taken track rod ends off, wouldn't be able to sleep if i hadn't, going to order a new set of tubes, it would of been to hard to fit and adjust as they were, and if im being honest i wasn't happy putting them on as they were as they wernt as good as they should of been.

is there a proper way of fitting them to make sure everything is straight and the wheels run correctly?

i think BALA is right.........that model of l/r didnt have a steering damper....as you got the l/r from "overseas" they might have been mending it with old scrap stuff...hence the mismatched part...i think you are doing right in getting a new set,,,,,,as regards to settings ....for a good guide somewhere they have written down what length the rods should be....do that and that will be enough to to see you right before you get the tracking done for the MOT

when you get the new set...copper slip...put clamps on.....screw joints in 2 turns each one.....fit to vehicle......then turn the rod by hand until the wheels look straight...........then measure...(there are measurments somewhere)....and clamp off and leave till the tracking needs to be done for the test........

iam sure your tubes would be alright apart from marks of the vice ,you said you struggled to fit the new track rod ends onto both tubes very common, I used to use the old track rod end and cut along the length of the thread both sides with a hacksaw to act has a thread cutter using plenty of wd or plus gas screwing the track rod end a few turns in a few turns out to clean the inner thread of the tube which gets full of crud a bit time consuming but easy doable when done track rod ends should go in by hand ,fit back on vehicle leaving clamps loose tighten tack rod end bolt to torque setting ,as a rough guide to tracking measure inner side of wheel lhs rim edge to rhs wheel rim edge half way up front edge first then repeat same at rear edge of rim any difference in measurement is taken up by turning the track rod tube then clamp up ,as I said rough guide but good enough to get you to a tracking machine , by the way I found in my garage a never used engine shut off cable and handle if its any use to you F O C you can have it, these posts are taking me back years when I was well into landrovers enjoyable reading .

Dont get it from the same place as the vice bud

i think a few people are not realising that the vice was a bit of a joke, it was a baby vice that for some reason id had in a draw for year, not even sure where i got it from, i wasnt expecting much from it other than to make some one laugh at it :lol:

ps, thats not a giant lighter :whistling:
