Made to measure/alterations stock company's.

Hi guys. I've not been shooting shotguns for long. I've only been clay shooting once in fact. I did quite good for my first outing. However while doing research on the sport I looked into eye dominance. It has been confirmed that I am left eye dominant. I will soon be seeing a very well respected coach.

To my main question now. If the coach says I will be better off shooting from the left so I can keep both eyes open and don't need to use any eye correction products then that's what I want to do.

The gun I have is a miroku mk38 trap gun. It's sentimental and is the gun I would like to use. So if I do decide to learn to shoot from the left then I would need a new stock or my existing one altered. It is fairly straight but has a right hand palm swell.

What are my options? Altered stock, bye a new stock, made to measure stock or reluctantly sell this and buy another gun. I don't really want to do the last but if it's the best option then I might have too.

Hopefully I will be ok of the right but I just want to be prepared. I've look online at left hand trap guns and can hardly find anything. Can most new guns be ordered with left hand stock? Thanks all.

I am left handed, shoot from the left shoulder but over the years my eye dominance changed from left to right. I tried shooting from the right shoulder but just could not get on with it, so now keep both eyes open and shut my right eye immediately prior to taking the shot.

This was advised by a coach and works OK for me, but I do not shoot clays only pigeons and game, so cannot comment on whether this method is best on clays.

If you get on alright shooting from the left shoulder, then no doubt keeping both eyes open would be your best option and then getting the stock altered accordingly, if as you say there are sentimental reasons for keeping the gun. No doubt the coach will advise your best option.

Best of luck whichever option you chose.

A right handed stock can't be made left handed it can be changed from cast off to cast on but the toe and other stock bits means it's always a right handed stock. Some shoot them left handed and manage but that's not ideal.

A custom stock is expensive.

A factory left handed stock can be fitted and then adjusted to fit far cheaper in most cases than a similar custom made stock and the same fit achieved.

I had the same thing where I'm right handed and starting shooting right handed only to find my left eye became dominant after a while. But even though I can't do anything else left handed in life (cue dirty minds), shooting left handed feels more natural for some reason. I carried on shooting right handed guns for about 9-10 years without a problem and shot well and only early this bought a left handed 20b which might have a bit too much left cast but I haven't shot it enough to really figure it out. In this months sporting gun there is an article about eye dominance of that helps and in the article they say as boggy says, shut right eye if your dominant eye doesn't match your preferred hand.

Thanks Winnie I will have a look at that article. The fibre optic beads don't look to bad. I didn't realise at first that the optic is down the whole so only the eye behind the rib can see it. Will see what the coach says and go from there. The fist time I went claying I did a 25 bird DTL. Only had 25 carts so was doing one cart per clay. I got 22 out of 25. So I can't be to faw out. I just want to iron out or understand these faults and figure out what I should do before I get into the sport properly. Saves getting rid of bad habits after I've been shooting for months. I've had lots of advice from many people so would like to thanks you all.

I am left handed and shoot Miroku's MK38's I have numerous right handed stocked ones and a couple of Left Handed ones. Shoot all of them well with no issues .

A skilled gunsmith / stocker can alter most stocks to suit , including altering the cast at toe . The difference between my R/H and L/H stocks is negligible in any case, R/H palm swell is of little consequence to a lefty as your fingers wrap round it and cope.

Wait until your coach advises you before wasting a lot of money possibly unnecessarily.

I'm left handed but right eye dominant, and just can't get comfortable shooting off the right shoulder, so as above, both eyes open to spot the bird or clay, then shut right eye to shoot.

Did buy an easihit sight and sticky it onto the rib, and if I got used to it it would work I think, but I've got 32" barrels, and can almost see the dot with both eyes as it's far enough away - don't stick it down if you buy one, use tape so you can tweak it til you're happy, then stick it.
