Chris Bb
We live in a 125 year old house which has a well, it's about 2 feet diameter and brick lined. Unfortunately a previous owner filled it in with rubbish and I've no idea how deep it needs to be to get to water. Does the PW massive have any ideas on whether it's possible/worth while to open it up?
figgy
Got to be worth opening it up again. The water table in your area will tell you how deep it needs to be.
Chris Bb
My thoughts exactly. Yet to find out how deep the water table is, any clues?
silver pigeon69
try the EA or this may help?? www.gov.uk/government/statistics/weekly-water-levels-ha...
oowee
Just from the size and construction its unlikely to be deep. If its the age of the house even the current water table level is unlikely to tell you the depth as this may have changed. Curiosity is likely to win the day you surely have to know whats down there ;-) I have a spring water feed here which could be treated (UV) to be drinkable but the flow volume does not make it practicable. 100milesaway
I lived in a 3 storey weavers cottage which had it's very own well on the bottom storey. The well was only about 3 feet deep and the cottage was dated 1646.The scull and various other symbols on the attic wall were more interesting , meant to ward off evil spirits. As the previous poster said the depth will always be relevant to the local table water. .. your nearest river will give you a good clue. from Auntie. norfolk dumpling
I've got a well out front of my old cottage (circa 1650) and whilst filled in 50 yrs ago, when property renovated, wondered about likely depth down to water - river at bottom of garden which is 8-10 ft below house level. Water depth for well??
