chady
Ok you might know I have put £200 deposit on the above car!! Might have just thrown in away...... Does anyone know about this timing chain problem in detail? There is a problem with the N47 engines in these, the chain snapping!! I have spoke to BMW and they say the engine in the car is not affected as N47T.... Don't know what to believe Plus there are plenty of BMW out there that have well over 100,000 mls so how many out there actually have this problem?? It seams to be cars from 07-09 that are affected!! But some apparently go into 2011!! So I'm at the back end of it but still could be effected!! Now I appreciate all cars have issues and none are gauanteed to breakdown. But this seams a bit common! But is it compared to the amount on the road....?? Can any one shed any light? Is the any BMW mechanics on hear?? Do I walk and lose my £200 deposit? Rupert
Because the timing chain is on the back of the engine driven from the crank when it goes its a new motor time, they made loads of this engine and its in a boat load of models. A significant number have suffered premature failure but still a small percentage overall. In all probability you will be right, but I would change at circa 90k miles
Rupert
Found this, gives some info and dates when BMW introduced a modified version. http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f74/n47-timing-chain-failures-influencing-factors-t119594/
FalconFN
Hmm that's worrying. I have an '08 318d that's done nearly 120K....
chady
Thanks the problem is I have not bought this car from cash, 75% is financed. Which is fine I can afford it. I can afford to maintain it as well. If it was a £500 job I would not be as worried but minimum £2500 up to £5500. I will struggle and to be honest it will probably mean £13500 down the drain. I love the car I genuinely do the drive the looks so on. But this has stumped me. Is the e220cdi any more reliable? It's either more money or more miles. The other option is RAC warranty but how much does this cost. And how long can you get them for?? It might not be a problem it's the 2.0 diesel that are affected. The 330d is fine apparently So check your engine. First before panicking Hmm that's worrying. I have an '08 318d that's done nearly 120K.... chady
Problem is mate it's an engine out job to do so looking at 1000 approximately, But then there are no guarantees people have had them replace 30,000 MPs late happened again. I have got a quote for warranty but it's £1000 for 3 years! So if I was to chance it I would have to go down this route I'm going to sleep on it tonight. twitchynik
I had an N47 engined 1er. Speaking to BMW techs the manual is much more at risk than the auto. Have you considered an insurance warranty from BMW? Different levels available and not too pricey.
chady
It's a manual the car is from a BMW specialist but the car has had a 5 year service plan that runs out in January. I can get a warranty from warranty direct £1000 for 3 years! But if I could get a warranty from BMW that would be an option. But I don't think they will due to not buying it from a BMW dealer directly Edited October 10, 2015 by chady
Del T
To get an bmw warranty it might have to be an auc and sold by a official bmw dealership. You get a year's warranty if its an auc then the option to renew after the year is up, my wife did this on her last car. The good thing with the official bmw warranty is that they don't quibble on anything. So for the extra premium that dealers charge on their used cars its sometimes worth it. chady
Thanks all I've spoke to BMW It's going to cost me £70 a month!! It's a lot but covers everything! Has a £250 excess! And emergency assistance is included so full recovery and home start etc and hire cars etc. So £70 a month full piece of mind! Over 5 years £4200 Or £60 a month without suspension and a few electrical components. But we have got the cost down from £13999 to £13500 already. I'm going to voice my concerns when I go and pick the car up and try and get them down to £13000 Then the car will have cost me £17000 over 5 years! Which is the same if not a bit less than a 12 plate or a 530d. And this way I have full recovery and 5 years warranty with main dealer! So I think this is what we are going to do! They can't all be dodgy!! It has had full BMW service history from the dealer it was bought from. And just a control box under warranty. And BMW say there are no recall on this engine as its the n24T engine that stands for N24 technical update. So with this and 42000mls on the clock I think it's the way to go. And the garage seams to be genuine and honest. See if I come back crying lol.

Rupert
Get it in for the oil every 10k and in all probability it will be a third party that ends the love affair. the 520d is a very capable motor

Anyway, they're great cars.. you'll love it

Anyway, they're great cars.. you'll love it Bmw in there wisdom designed the engine with the bottom cog integral with the crank at the back of the engine right up against the bulkhead under the scuttle. Some cheaper chain repairs just did the chain and left the crank in.Mainly resulting in premature second failure. chady
I'm going to treat it like my wife! With love and care! But give it a good thrashing every now and then to give it a clear out.........

Rupert
I think it was an option goto your local main dealer, they have a bloke "The guru" yeah serious, he will show you all the features and gadjets.
Del T
Its an option, its normally in the boot on the left hand side. They are all prepared with the wires though. I've got a spare one somewhere that sometimes wouldn't select discs from my wifes old 3 series. Would work perfect for weeks then would act up for a day or two so she bought a new one. Can send it for some beer tokens as its just sat in a wardrobe somewhere.

My wife has a 14 plate 330d m sport and its very quick when in super sports mode. Even though the bhp isn't that high you get really pushed back into your seat by the huge amount of torque.
