DPFs

I am looking for another motor, probably a soft roader (xtrail, vitara etc) but I do not do many motorway miles and the more I read the more DPF horror stories and as most of the cars available are diesel makes me wonder. I have maybe £7000 to spend so its going to be a few years old, anything without a dpf? Or should I just buy petrol and put up with lower mileage etc

cheers

I had a freelander 2 2008 model with out a DPF fitted. unfortunatly the rest of the car was sheer pants. Was costing me an arm and leg in parts for it as it was forever going wrong. There are a few diesel 4x4s out there with out DPF fitted, you just got to look.

To be honest, there is no way I would purchase any car that has a DPF fitted as they are more trouble then they are worth.

I had a 2009 ford focus with a DPF and most my driving is round town but being aware of the DPF we did at least one long journey a month and it still went at 70k miles. My mate has 2007 Golf GT tdi and does a lots of motorway miles as his family live 100 miles from us and the DPF still went at just under 100k and being a VW his cost twice mine !

I`m currently looking for a new vehicle and will not buy diesel for this reason which is a shame as most the cars I fancy are diesels.

Before ruling out petrol cars and putting up with the DPF diesel, check out running costs, not fuel, but the costs of servicing and service parts, diesels generally higher in price due to the dirty nature of the fuel, also the price of suitable oil for a diesel is higher and higher again for the low ash/low saps oil required for them.

My shogun has a dpf and the light has been on more frequently of late due to shortl journeys, put a bottle of wynns dpf cleaner through the tank which was £15 wasted, a friend is a manager at Honda and recommended some trade only wurth dpf cleaner in an aerosol (got some from flea bay) that goes directly into the dpf . Put it in yesterday and looked like the red arrows display team for 20 mins with all the smoke so hopefully it has done the trick (bit to early to tell) .. They aren't as scary as they once were now they have been about a bit, I was quoted £700 to remove the insides of the dpf and refit it but the first place I looked online offers new replacement units with a fitting kit for only £199 delivered compared to the 4 figure Sums they were a few years back, I wouldn't worry about having a dpf nowadays
