aga man
I was invited to go along and attempt to shoot some pigeons, with a good friend and old time shooting buddy today. He had seen some pigeons local to him and with numbers building daily he called to see the farmer. As usual at this time of year there were restrictions on the pigeon shooting because of game cover etc. My shooting buddy is a farmer himself so was able to convince the farmer to let us shoot, but not exactly where we wanted to be. We chose to shoot today as the wind was favourable for our position. We arrived on our field which was an old barley stubble that had been sprayed off with roundup. The pigeons were on the rape, at 10 am this morning and yes they were feeding hard on it. We knew the pigeons were starting on the rape here but we couldn't shoot the rape field as "it could upset the neighbouring game shoot as there cover strip bordered the rape. We decided to set up on the barley stubble [next field over] and use the wind at our backs and a busy looking decoy pattern to try and pull birds off there flightlines. The pattern consisted of two magnets, a flapper, a floater and 12 deads on cradles. The plan worked for a while and good bunches of woodies decoyed straight to us. The shooting was not great to start off and I had to have a word with myself! Eventually we got in the groove, we both managed a few left and right but is was tricky as birds flared with wind after the first shots. Sport slowed after lunch as the rain moved in. By 3.30pm any lines had dried up so we called it a day. A sometimes frustrating but rewarding day, which tested our patience and fieldcraft. The tricky to decoy pigeons provided some great sport. We picked up 77 woodies and I feral pigeon. Sorry about the presentation PC but it was starting to rain and we was ready for home Edit to say shot birds had a mix of Hawthorn berries, old barley/wheat rape leaf and elderberries [ not beechmast or acorns] in there crops, which I guess is why they are on the rape. pigeon controller
Great report of a good days shooting , well done. Presentation is adequate for the incoming rain. It's interesting that they were on the rape. Most of our rape is nearly a foot high and very lush with no bare patches, role on the frosts to knock it back.
