Dave-G
Fair play to you Dayvo for finally giving in as you have enough to keep you occupied. At the risk of generalising, a lot of older guys get a bit tired of killing things. I hardly ever go out now but am too stubborn to give it up totally and I have to test some things I make. If I had a shooting partner who works permanent nights and has Sunday or Monday nights off I'd go out a lot more for the crack but when it just to go out on my own to kill something the urge is not as strong these days. I spend more time in the man shed now. lol.
Davyo
Dave, that's part of it,I was out 3 nights a week and nearly every night during the harvest. My son packed in a couple of yrs back when he moved from socks to girls lol.My shooting buddy then kept me company but his wife isn't to well ( long term) so I was out most nights on my own & it's nice to have someone to crack on to & have a cup of tea while sitting in the truck waiting for Charlie. When I was out on my own 10 minutes sitting in the truck felt like an hour. One warm night during the harvest I got laid on the roof of the truck with the 243 on the pod.Must of been about 12.30 am,next thing I knew it was 4.30 am & light so time to pack in. Redgum
Its certainly a fine balance enjoying your sport as you get older and I can sympathise with ya Davyo, I'm the same age as you mate and my wife has long term health problems. Having three teenagers in the house seems to sap just about ever ounce of spare energy you have. When your young and single the only problem is finding enough ground to shoot over, when your older and have the ground its energy and time that's lacking. Luckily my youngest son is into his shooting, just bought him a 20 bore and he's dead keen to start fly fishing, I haven't got the rods out in years so looking forward to that. I get a lot of satisfaction spending time in one of my highseats watching the world go by, sometimes the deer go by to as dragging fallow about in the woods just gets harder. Maybe its an age thing but things just seem to be more complicated now, we are in the third year of the badger cull in my neck of the woods and the anti's are about most of the time, even after the cull, kicking over pheasant feeders and ripping down high seats. The younger lads that are doing the culling seem to have no morals when it comes to getting on land, and as the farmers are glad to see the back of TB they feel its fair reward to let the cullers share your shooting. Of course sharing isn't a bad thing but a young single lad will be out with his mates seven days a week leaving not much else for others but hey ho I was young and keen once. browning123
Must of been a hard decision for you to make - I'm 68 and started shooting at 8 years of age with an air rifle, I now struggle some days when walking up hills etc, and when it's cold, but I won't give up shooting. I now have heart, lung and other health problems, and have been told by Consultants to stop shooting - but if I do.......I might as well stop living! Alycidon
As you get older the desire to kill and the energy required to get out fades. Shoot occasionally myself now but not often, enjoy the crack and working my dogs but no longer feel the desire to kill lots by and large. Having said that today when feeding the birds a rifle would have been handy as a gang of maggies has moved in. A
