monkeyjaimz
Now then fellas, had a trip out to a large local sunday market with the missus this morning at a disused old air-force barracks. While walking around one of the indoor bits housed in an old hanger, I came across a couple of guys with a large shooting stall selling everything from cheap chinese springers to logun pcps and everything in between. I asked on one the guys if he had any logun lamp filters, he said he didnt but he did in his 'proper shop' in notts. I then asked if he had any Bisley mags in .177, again he did have them but they were in his 'proper shop'. He then tried to flog me any kind of pellet he could except the ones I actualy wanted - though speaking to him it was obvious he didnt have a clue what he was talking about with regards to pellets and their behaviour in differant calibres etc. The real kicker was that I spotted an Umerex Airmagnum on the wall behind him with a very short barrel, I asked him about it and he brought it over, on inspection - they had sawn the barrel down to about 4 inches and stuck a silencer on the end of it, and inside the fore-end of the stock where a co2 bottle should go they had installed a pcp air chamber instead. The really shocking bit was that he gave me a wicked grin and told me that he was getting 40 shots a charge out of it at 20 ft/lbs! (this is being sold over a stall at a market that sells pirate dvd's etc) and apparantly they sell like hot cakes He also told me that if I took any rifle into him he could 'turn it up' for me no problem. As we walked away I tried to explain to the missus the severity of what they were doing, I dont know if they were time-served gunsmiths or not so I guess i cant comment on the legalities of a 'cut and shut' air-rifle, but i know damn well that an air-rifle running at 20 ft/lbs is a firearm by definition and has no place being sold to anybody over a market stall table. Anybody have any comments or suggestions?

BSA Shaun
he is selling what is legally termed as a fire-arm which requires a FAC to purchase, therefore by offering it to you without asking for certification etc he has broken the law. People like those are the ones who end up making the government bring in new legislations etc and make our lives harder than they need be. Shop them. No question. jerico
I think even if the rifle was below 12ft/lb, because of the short barrell it would be classed as a pistol and would again be classed as a firearm if over 6ft/lb. I would deffo report it.
monkeyjaimz
Went down to local pc plod office after work, would have gone sooner but been swamped. Gave them all the details including the card he gave me with his address and number on Got the distinct impression I knew more about the law than they did in this instance, although, as soon as the word 'firearm' was mentioned - several ears were pricked up. Think the **** may well be hitting the fan at that market in the very near future, as well as a certain address in notts
Cranfield
I was at a Boot Fair in Kent about 10 years ago and a stall that had airweapons, targets, speciality catapults, knives and other similar items, was "raided" by two uniformed police and about eight people in plainclothes. I don't know whether they were Customs, Trading Standards, or Police. They handcuffed the three blokes selling and reversed vans up to the stall and loaded everything up and took it away. Strangely, we never saw a word about the outcome in the local newspapers.
