Styla247
Hi guys, Im getting into reloading and have been given some bits. Some red dot powder, cci 209 primers, felt wads and a load of pre primed gamebore 70mm cartidges. My main question is, Does anyone know what primers are fitted to the gamebore cartidges and are they compatible with red dot powder. My second question is, would i be able to make some 28g clay loads with what ive got. Im a bit confused by the recipes on the alliant website as they are american and make reference to random things. My main query is the size of the wad. What size will i need. Thanks Nick
rbrowning2
Nick, you are being ignored because you have asked a question that is very difficult to answer unless you work for gamebore. Their are several manufactures of primers and cases giving many combinations of primed cases, so the primer will depend on who supplied the primed cases you have to gamebore. Red dot is a reasonably fast powder so you should have no problem getting it burning so I would expect any primer will be ok to use but the issue will be the pressure as it will be different for each primer type. So as a beginner, your only 100% safe way forward would be to send test cartridges to the proof house for testing, experienced reloaders may work the load up but that is not without risk. hakapiken
Gamebore uses a lot of cx2000 primers. Look inside the shell. If the top of the primer is marked black, then it is probably cx2000. The cx2000 is ranked as a hot primer, but not as hot as the amerikan magnum types. deershooter
You will be fine following a recipie on the Alliant website as for wads you are going to need a wad coloum of somewhere around 24mm .You will need a over powder card and a wad ,possibly card or cork spacers to make up the height .new cases are very hard to crimp for a beginner I would recommend trying some once fired ones first .There will be no problem with the Gamebore primers if you want to use them .loads using plastic wads normally are around 10% less powder than felt . Only load up to 28 gram shot weight with red dot it's one of the fast powders .Only load a few to test before you load boxes full Deershooter

Styla247
Thanks Deershooter, i have found a few recipes on the alliant web site but i think they are for plastic wads. None of them mention height of the wad. Would i be able to make the wad higher by chopping one to size and adding that. Thanks
rbrowning2
Styla247, Look at various suppliers web sites and you will see that the fibre wad comes in various lengths, so after you have put the red dot in the case one would then add a nitro or over powder card then the fibre wad. The fibre wad needs to be the correct height to bring the shot to the correct height in the case to give a satisfactory closing crimp. To low and the crimp will fall into the case to high and you could crush the case. The wad height required depends on the case length (65, 67, 70mm etc) the size and amount of shot (7.5 28gm or 6 32gm etc) being used and the amount and type/density of powder being used. You can cut the wads to alter the length but it is probably not something you would want to do in quantity but would allow you to cut a few until you have arrived at the correct length or you could buy a limited quantity of different lengths to start with until you identify the correct length to use. As has been said it is normal for fibre cartridges to use a little more powder than the same load in plastic wad, so you should be safe to start with by using the same amount of powder as suggested for the plastic load and then use the fibre wad and work the load up from their. But as per my original post the only 100% safe way is to send sample for testing it the proof house.
