Muddy foxing....again

The ground where I shoot isnt much fun to be on at the moment. You make so much noise walking about that most things here you half a mile away. Also with work commitments I havent been out much over the last week so have some ground to cover to catch up. Additionally I have taken on another 200 or so acres so I am trying to get out on the new ground as well. Amusingly I drew a blank the couple of times I went out over the weekend ...and got a photo sent to me from the owner of a dog fox sat in the field on the Sunday morning....typical but you have to laugh.

I got out last night and pretty well gave up on the one farm after 20 mins as it was so wet. Over to another 400 acres where I have to shoot off the top of the pickup as the ground is so flat. Put the caller out on the one side of the farm for 20 minutes but despite hearing a dog fox barking I couldnt get him to come in. Moved position and set the vixen call going..nice bright pair of eyes. Over to the NV and finally he came through the hedge and headed into the field stopping at 120 yards. Pulled the trigger..bang..off runs the fox.....*** cant have missed. Fortunately he hadnt realised he was dead and I found him about 15 yards away. The entry wound looks a little high in the pic but due to the angle (shooting downhill) the exit wound was spot on. I may decide to move away from 80 grain softpoints and move back to 75 grain ballistics as I have had a couple run despite good shot placement (though they dont go far).

I waited another 20 or so mins and moved again. Got set up...caller on and another fox appeared. No safe shot and as the wind was wrong he legged it.

Over to farm no 3 and despite walking and calling for a couple of hours nothing appeared so off home to bed. 3 farms down, 3 or 4 more tonight and then over to a mates to check out a few more acres tomorrow night.

Thanks for reading

Good shooting Mike, I've used 80g winchester soft points on foxes before and not really been impressed. All dead but a few runners and not great expansion, ballistic tips on the other hand, well out of the .243 that really can get messy!

Cheers mate. I used 75 grain Super performance SST rounds to start off with and they certainly did the job though limited the photo opportunities. I got a good deal on the soft points but I think I will move back once I use them up. Whilst they dont run far I always prefer them to drop on the spot.

Nice one Mike. :good:

Cheers Steve. Any sign of you getting out or do you still need a boat to get around?

I went out a week last Friday, but it poured down! Hoping to get out this Friday evening/night. I won't be using my Nv scope though, as I want to make sure it's zeroed correctly.

Good luck when you do manage to get out mate. Make sure to get your scope zeroed before the warranty runs out
