tonker
I was invited out for a walk around a 600 acre wood this afternoon. We were going after the Roe does. It was quite windy with squally rain showers skitting through, but just being out in the woods was a joy in itself. It took a long time trying to travel quietly with all the sticks that had blown down, we saw quite a lot but they knew we were there. We got close enough to a couple but no shot presented itself (always branches. twigs or a fence in the way) As the light began to fade we started to make our way back to the jimney, about 3/4 of the way back my mate stopped suddenly And as I looked over his shoulder I saw what I thought was a brown dog crossing the ride. He said did you see that. I said 'what the dog', 'doughnut' he said that was a munty. As the title says I've never even seen one of these before as there are none in my neck of the woods. I put it down to failing light, old eyes, and not knowing, that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it. The next 20 mins seemed to take forever, a few slow steps and then a scan with the Bino's a few more and scan again, watching for sticks and rolling our feet in the wet conditions underfoot to avoid as much noise as we could. about a hundred yards we covered, as we rounded a bend I spotted it up on the slope above us, with plenty of backstop, had to hurry as it was onto us almost immediately, the rest as they say is history. By the time we carried it back to the truck it was fully dark so we only just made it. lovely looking things, it had a fair head, not brilliant but had a brow tine on both sides, when back and dressed out it was just over 24lb, so not bad at all I was told. Anyway that is one more to tick off.
