Gun Watch
AYA No.3 Boxlock £300 12 gauge Shotgun Private Seller Used - Excellent Condition Harrogate, North Yorkshire Side by Side, 1/2 Choke, Full Choke, 28" barrels Description AYA No 3, 12 Bore, Boxlock, Extractor, Double Triggers. Manufactured 1969 and in excellent condition. Colour case hardened boxlock action retaining almost all it's original colour. Well balanced 28" fixed choke barrels - Choked half and full. Automatic safety catch, nicely scroll engraved. Non ejector, which can often be better than chucking cartridges all over the place when game shooting. The barrels are still very nicely blued with hardly any noticeable marks at all. There is a tiny pin sized ding on the outside of one barrel but that's it. The bores look like new and I don't think it has ever had much use. Nicely finished one piece straight hand stock with a matching slim game style forend with push rod release catch that works perfectly. The woodwork is all excellent apart from a small piece missing from the front side edge of the forend which can be seen in the pictures but is hardly noticeable and would be easy to restore if you felt the need. I have just had the top lever spring replaced at a cost of £50 and it has only shot 20 cartridges since. Beautiful example of this lightweight game gun. More pictures available upon request. Only selling as I bought an AYA No.2 sidelock so it's no longer being used. This gun is being sold by Pigeon Watch member ChrisPCarter. sishyplops
i think that may be a Yeoman matey as its pinned not screwed, might be wrong though
ChrisPCarter
Hmmm I contacted AYA with the serial number and they got back to me to say it's a Model 400E from 1963. Now I'm confused... I'm open to offers, it's a nice gun whatever it is! Edited March 1, 2016 by ChrisPCarter
ElvisThePelvis
I'm confused too, I have what looks like one of these which was sold to me as a no3... How did you find out more?
ChrisPCarter
Yes I was told mine was a No3 too but apparently there were quite a few variations and crossover periods between models. If you go to the AYA website you can send them your serial number and ask what they know about it from their records, which are usually quite good. I've asked a couple of times and they have got back to me the same day. http://www.aya-fineguns.com/contacto/ I've just searched for a 400E and the only thing I could find didn't look like mine. It does look like a No3 and the Yeoman looks more basic? Edited March 1, 2016 by ChrisPCarter
ChrisPCarter
I've updated the original add on Gun Watch to say it's a 400E but I'm not sure if that will change on here. There's not a lot of info on the 400E but the three I have seen on old sales have all been over £600 so I will try adjusting my price! sishyplops
the reason i said possibly a yeoman was because the action is pinned together not screwed like the no3 and no4, a no3 is a no4 without ejectors, it looks in great condition considering its age, i have 2 standard no4's and a best quality boxlock version with the scalloped action
Thunderbird
I have a number 3 and so do two other mates, and all three are the semi-pistol grip type with a 3" chamber. Here's a pic of mine. Hope this helps. Good luck with the sale at any rate, in my experience people are rarely disappointed with an AYA.

Thunderbird
Makes sense, does your book say whether the non-magnum version has the same grip?
matone
The OP `s gun is an early No 3 basically, early No 4 `s are similar. Both are much better finished than Yeomans, and have concave ribs with no heel plates. Nice guns.
ChrisPCarter
Yes it does seem to meet all these descriptions, I hadn't noticed the stock difference. Concave rib and it's in really good nick. I'm actually tempted to keep it... ha ha! I bought an old No2 sidelock so the sale of this was meant to be going towards it. I think this thread is being closed as it's been relisted on here as a 400E since i renamed it on Gun Watch.

Mine is a push rod type. I've looked at a lot of pictures of No3's and hadn't noticed this. Is it just a magnum thing then? Mine isn't 3" chambered. I might start another thread about it as this is all good stuff to know and this one is being closed.
sishyplops
ye Chris the magnums had beaver forends and pistol grips, but if you look at the action you can see the screws on the pic of the no3 where yours is pinned
matone
They used the `pinned method before the lock screw version ,there are XXV `s built on the same action. They`re just earlier versions !!!!
Brixsmaid
There's some very knowledgeable folk on AYA owners group uk on FB may be able to sort this out and put you're query to bed!
