Suzuki Jimny Enquiry

Hello guys and gals

I have a enquiry that someone with a jimny may be able to help me with ? I m looking to buy one and the one I would like is a y reg one. It's about an hours drive from me an upon asking the seller about if the 4x4 system was working he says that when he puts it in 4wd a light flashes on the dashboard. Is this normal or does it indicate a fault ? He said he could hear it clunk into 4wd and that possibly it flashes when in lo range?

Thanks

Having had a JImny, you have to depress the cluch to go into four wheel drive and then again to go down into low ratio. The ligh on the 4 x 4 symbol should be steady when the change is complete. If it contiues to flash it usually means the freewheel front hubs haven't locked up. This might just be the vacuum pipe needs replacing but may be more expensive.

Hope this helps,

David.

I can only recall having to use the clutch to engage high/low within the gearbox but not for plain 4wd which is engaged at the front wheels hence no clutch required, or am I going mad :hmm:

The vacuum pipes are steel with rubber hoses where flexibility is needed. About eighth bore size or 3mm.

A Y reg will most likely need some replacing and it is an easy job.

Sometimes mine won't disengage 4WD on tarmac! The transmission winds up some and I have to reverse a little until I hear or feel it come out.

Sometimes this will make my dash light flash!

Jimny should not be used in 4wd on tarmac in dry conditions because it has no centre diff and transmission will "wind up" when going round corners.
