joecole
Hello guys and gals I have a enquiry that someone with a jimny may be able to help me with ? I m looking to buy one and the one I would like is a y reg one. It's about an hours drive from me an upon asking the seller about if the 4x4 system was working he says that when he puts it in 4wd a light flashes on the dashboard. Is this normal or does it indicate a fault ? He said he could hear it clunk into 4wd and that possibly it flashes when in lo range? Thanks
armsid
if he has owned the vehicle for some time he must know what the light is for and if 4wd works or is he a dealer hoping to pass it on without knowing if it works or not check on google what light means
browning123
Yes, a light comes up on the dash when put into four wheel drive.
sitsinhedges
What caught me out was the fact you have to use the clutch to put in in high or low range, but not just in to FWD, or was it the other way round
Kalahari
Having had a JImny, you have to depress the cluch to go into four wheel drive and then again to go down into low ratio. The ligh on the 4 x 4 symbol should be steady when the change is complete. If it contiues to flash it usually means the freewheel front hubs haven't locked up. This might just be the vacuum pipe needs replacing but may be more expensive. Hope this helps, David.

I can only recall having to use the clutch to engage high/low within the gearbox but not for plain 4wd which is engaged at the front wheels hence no clutch required, or am I going mad
joecole
Cheers guys it helped alot, the chap has had it 3 years and said never needed to use 4WD system, I might give it a look over and see. Thanks again
dunnin21
Flashing means its not engaged most like a break in the vacuum pipe as hubs are vacuum operated, this ìs a common problem on then had 2 with this fault
WinchesterDave
Don't need clutch for 4wd mate. Only for Low box however if the clutch isn't FULLY depressed the '4L' symbol will flash a few times. You just have to make sure the clutch is depressed and then re-engage
Kalahari
Don't "need" clutch for for 4WD I agree, but just dipping it as you make the change really smooths it out. David.
Underdog
The vacuum pipes are steel with rubber hoses where flexibility is needed. About eighth bore size or 3mm. A Y reg will most likely need some replacing and it is an easy job. Sometimes mine won't disengage 4WD on tarmac! The transmission winds up some and I have to reverse a little until I hear or feel it come out. Sometimes this will make my dash light flash! Jimny should not be used in 4wd on tarmac in dry conditions because it has no centre diff and transmission will "wind up" when going round corners.
