steve_b_wales
Is Hodgdon H4198 the same as IMR 4198 ?
Savhmr
They both have similar burn rates Steve but in some of my manuals, give slightly different loads for the same bullet. If you check out Hogdon's website, they also provide different loads for the same bullet weights using these powders, with IMR4198 reaching compression a little earlier than Hogdon and showing less charge for max recommended loads and higher velocities with IMR. IMR also produces higher pressures so it would appear that far from being interchangeable you run the risk of exceeding max recommended pressures if using IMR to Hogdon load data. It would seem that it is not at all recommended to treat them as interchangeable.
Benthejockey
Both are made by Hogdon but they're different powders. I had the same thought initially with another Hogdon/IMR combo. I googled it all a while back but can't for the life of me remember their reasons for it other than it makes them more money having lots of similar but different powders. I have a tub of H4198 here, which I thought could be used. But,as you said, it could cause problems, so I'll get a tub of IMR 4198 or maybe some R7. Steve. Hogdon's own data seems to be the best source. http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

mowdy
I sometimes use imr 4198 in my ·444 and 9'3mm . But I prefer reloader 7 as I do find 4198 bit mucky in my guns. Bob
steve_b_wales
Just had this email from Hodgdon. No, they are not the same powder. They are made on different continents, they have different chemistry, different granule size, different burn speed and different data.
