The times you are not sure you want to shoot anything

I was not feeling great yesterday and wanted to get out for more of a walk around with the gun rather than plan much shooting. I was at the back end of a cold and still aching a bit so told myself NO muntjac as I really did not want to carry one back the mile or so to the car.

I left my binos behind so as not to tempt me but took the .222 as it is so light and nice to shoot. I kind of thought that the foxes might be liking the warm evening sun so the walk might not be fruitless after all. I checked out sheep so see they were all fine and continued on to one of my favourite spots for having a little sit. This little spot has a natural seat in the hedge where a hawthorn bough swings down low and the perfect height to take a rest. It also happens to be in a great spot for shooting just 60 yards from where a few gateways all come together.

Upon arrival I could see a couple of hares having a little munch and basking in the evening sun. As some may remember, I've stopped shooting these little beauties now. I could also just make out the head of a cock pheasant peeping out of the rape in its full yellow glory. So all was quiet and well. I try to let these creatures be even though I am not shooting them as they act as great signals and alarms as to when something is not quite right.

After about 10 minutes of sitting on my favourite "farmchair" the hares ran towards me and headed off into the rape, the cock pheasant piped up and clearly they were all alarmed. There was only one serious possibility, a fox was coming towards me but out of sight the other side of a hedge.

I picked up the rifle and readied myself for a charlie to appear. Sure enough a moment later charlie came trotting through the gateway nose down on the hare tracks. A quick whistle, bang, thud and it was curtains for charlie. Anyone noticed how they smell worse at this time of year? I guess it was to attract the lady foxes a some months ago.

So my walk was worthwhile and I felt the better for it. The farmer was happy too.
